Its a funny old construction innit? Looks like concrete columns with some kind of steel portal, pre fab'd on top. You would only use the steel if you wanted to form something intricate, so it must have been a bar or club plan. Would have been suprised if it would have survived a fire intact.

It used to be 'disco-pub IDEA'. I used to go there in my teens. It was an open air bar/club with awnings strung between trees. At the time most clubs were open air-Ku(now priviledge),amnesia terrace, Es Paradise. The local authorities imposed noise restrictions stating music should not be heard outside the venues after midnight. All the clubs then built a roof. Priviledge was shut because the owner could not afford to put a roof on at the time. I think it was closed for about 5 years.

The steel construction was for the roof of 'Idea' it was built one winter prob 20 years ago but never got further. Various rumours- owner ran out of money,no planning permission, who knows. It is a real eyesore maybe with the new laws comining into affect( i.e. owners will have to maintain exteriors of buildings to a certain standard) mean something will now be done about it!

The entrance to the original 'idea' is still there, it is used for posters now.

With all the fuss about closures, police etc this year, those who have been going to ibiza for a long time will know this has happened before when authorities made clubs build a roof(how Space got away with the open terrace all those years?!). The club scene then went into decline for a while but reinvented itself.

Have no fear people, Ibiza constantly reinvents itself sometimes for better, sometimes for worse but it has always had and i'm sure it always will have the party vibe. I've been holidaying there for 28 years!

Aaaaah the mystery is resolved. I've always wondered what this was. Wonder why no one can knock it down? Presumably the guy still owns the land and can't/won't do anything with it?

do you have old pictures from ku/amnesia/esparadis/etc ??

according to the bio-article appeared today on DDI, he wanted to reopen idea in the future and already had the plans of the new design for the club :!:

with his death, and the high cost for the town hall to knock it down, we can expect to see that ugly structure there for a long time.....

... the owner of idea and the lands nearby (including the parking area opposite bar m)

Sala's Plea

The mayor of San Antonio, Jose Sala, has appealed for help in modernising
the ageing municipality.
In a statement whilst visiting the work taking place in front of es Pouet beach -
close to the border with San Jose, to be completed next month -
he confirmed he had requested a special subsidy from the Council.
Sala said San Antonio was one of the more mature resorts in the Balearics,
and that work was needed to cement its place as a market leader.
He continued that the plan was extremely ambitious and ...

... even contemplated the removal of the structure at the entrance to the town -
formerly the open-air disco, Idea -
which has remained an eyesore for the last 15 years.
A huge wellness centre is to be put in its place which will include
indoor pools, a spa, and rooms for massage and talasotherapy treatments.

Not quite. The noise regulations were to be imposed in 1990. Privilege was called Ku at that time and had a roof built at the same time as Es Paradis and Amnesia had theirs built ready for the 1990 holiday season. The roof collapsed in 1991

this ugly thing must be there since a zillion years ...

Casting my mind back to early to mid 80's, I can rememebr on the same side of the road there used to be a Hippy Market which had wooden gates and grey concrete walls. Anyone else remember it?

New Idea

The Town Hall of San Antonio confirmed it would do everything in its power
to ensure the disused discotheque at the entrance to the town,
formerly known as Idea, was never reopened.

The open air club, popular during the late 80's, closed soon after the former
Balearic Minister for Tourism, Jaume Cladera, ordered all such buildings to install a roof
in order to avoid noise pollution.

The former owner, Xavier Cabau, who died last year, began work but was unable
to finish for various reasons.
It has remained closed ever since.

The councillor for town planning, Josefa Costa, explained the Town Hall remained
confident the disco would never be reopened and even hoped it could be pulled down
in the near future.

She claimed the building was structurally dangerous and called on the current owners
to prove its safety within the next month.
