Hey folks... back from Jo'burg in one piece but barely made it through the weekend alive
Here we go:
Thursday - Last night out in Johannesburg. Forced by my colleagues to go to strip club in the suburbs (I generally dislike strip clubs... product of my liberal northeastern US education). Totally depressing experience - all the waitresses were Afrikaaners, the people who cleaned and bussed tables were black (and would be called over to tables by waitresses with a 'tskk' noise... like when you call a cat
), and the dancers were all Russian or Ukrainian (one told us she was "sold" there from another club in Capetown... another went to the same small-town elementary school as one of my colleagues
) Worse kind of segregation and exploitation. The whole experience was upsetting so I went to bed when we got back to the hotel at 11ish.
Friday - Last day in Jo'burg. Overall it was a great trip... photos coming soon.
Left for the airport at 4pm and spent 23 hours getting back to Moscow including travel to/from airport, layover in Dubai, etc.
Saturday - Got home, unpacked, changed, then out for dinner at an Indian restaurant and over to Club XIII for Paul Oakenfold. It was officially his birthday party, even though his birthday was a month ago. He celebrated his 40th out here 2 years ago and had such a killer time that he called up my promoter friend and asked to do it all over again
Oaky played a set of light trance for the masses but I actually enjoyed the deep house played by the following DJ (a local guy, DJ Miller) a little more
After a strange series of events...
Sunday - ...I headed off to the after-hours club Mix where I ran into all kinds of familiar faces before dragging my very weary, barely-slept-on-the-airplane body home at 11am. Woke up at 5pm and then off to the sports bar to meet up with friends and watch Chelsea dominate Liverpool
Ok, dominate might be harsh but they certainly rained in the goals
Now I'm home and getting ready to start copying Jo'burg photos from all my flash cards.
