Bristol, UK based trio, Way Out West - WOW - will be releasing their new album, 'Don't Look Now' this coming Sunday, 29TH, August. Though it's taken two years for Jody Wisternoff, Nick Warren and vocalist, Omi to complete the project, the band's approach is 'doing your best or don't bother at all,' Jody Wisternoff says: 'There's been so many new things already done, it's difficult to move in new directions especially with the state of dance music in recent years. The enthusiasm gets knocked out of you by all the doom-mongers saying the scene's dead. It's not dead by any stretch of the imagination. It's just a transitional period.'
At only 30 years of age, Wisternoff's been in the business for half of his life as a successful producer, remixer and dj. He was bitten by the massive UK rave bug of the early '90's and met music-obsessed and WOW co-founder Nick Warren in 1993. The duo collaborated on some tracks and became known for their remixes as WOW, so the latter name stuck. Through deConstruction records, WOW's first track, 'Ajare' was released in 1994 followed by 'Domination' and then 'The Gift' which reached number 15 in the UK singles chart, which firmly establishing WOW as a leader of UK house acts.
WOW's first self-titled album in 1997 was so successful that the duo found themselves touring live with gigs at Glastonbury, MTV parties and the MIDEM festival in France. In 2000, WOW released their second album, 'Intensify' on Distinctive Records with the title track and two other singles, 'Stealth' and 'Mindcircus' making the top 40 and hitting the number one spot on dance charts. The mind-blowing vocals of Kirsty Hawkshaw, Ally Keenan and Tricia Kelshall were 'precisely the development that made Wisternoff and Warren decide they wanted to become more of a band.'
Vocalist Omi, who was previously managed by Wisternoff's father and whose influences range from Annie Lennox to Ella Fitzgerald, auditioned for WOW 7 years ago and has completed the group every since. 'We wanted a bit more of a culture going on, now we've got our secret weapon there's a lot more unity,' says Wisternoff.
The new album, 'Don't Look Now' maintains those shifting soundscapes so typical of WOW, however, expect some refreshing changes. Thrown in are some staccato, bongo twists, mangled bass lines and Omi's yearning voice for a very tantalizing musical journey.
In the midst of today's roaring music industry, WOW delivers the goods on the 29th this month through Hope Recordings and Distinctive Records!
