my 2cents are that the opeartion on his tumour was unsuccesful (hence the non removal of gene hunt) he dreamt the waking in the modern day hospital, returning to work and jumping stuff and always remained in 1973 (in his head) (maybe)

I believe that he was dead at the end and back in 73 - what a cracking ending though and I only through that bit when he cut his finger and said "I cant feel" - cant wait for Ashes to Ashes....

he was in a coma
1973 was in his sub-concious but also real (proof being the Gene Hunt spinoff to come)
when he woke he realised his modern life was empty and he wanted to go back to 1973
so he killed himself to get back there
 
but how would he be able to gurantee that he would be able to get back to 1973 by jumping off the building?

its alot to take on trust just to see a bird (who doesn't put out)

Or maybe he went back in order to make his fortune on sporting bets, such as Grand National etc etc and live the high life.....
