UK Clubs closing at an alarming rate

i only went once and hated it. staff were really oppressive. subbie and admiral were way more fun & relaxed in glasgow with a more clued up crowd. going back years though.

My experience of the Arches was that the staff were very lenient. I must have been pretty messy in there on a few occasions. I also liked the size of it: at least a couple of rooms on, plus chill out space. Obviously depends on what the night is too.

In its heyday (late 90s / 00s), the Arches was easily one of the best venues in Europe. Being able to go from intimate theatre shows, to contemporary art (they put on one of Banksy's first shows in the early 00s), to gigs and massive club nights, made it so unique.

I worked in the (daytime) box office in the early 00s whilst at Glasgow Uni and absolutely loved the place. Some club nights may have attracted an interesting crowd but the likes of Patterns, Soma Fridays, Utter Gutter, Fruitfly, were all fantastic and I made friends through those nights who are still some of my closest friends.

I was living in Brighton when it was forced to close in 2015, due to Glasgow City Council's ridiculous attitude to one of the safest venues in the city. Nothing to do with the hotel planning application next door, of course! Reporting and looking after people ironically was their downfall. Rather than turfing people in a bad way into the street.

I went to a few gigs there too. Plus it was a nice bar. First visit though was for Alien War at the age of 16. Scary as heck.

Wire, Leeds
Marina Fountain, St Leonards

know people involved with both.

what's currently happening to UK clubs is so grim right now

Starts off with the effect of university breaks on Mcr nightlife but expands quite a bit to the state of national nightlife.
Only a short listen
The Mill podcast

Not a club as we would describe one, but I note that (London) Soho's famous Groucho Club has shut down due to a 'serious crime'.

Given the lenciency shown to it's well-documented drug-use over the years, in stark contrast to the policing of some of our actual nightclubs, sometimes, I wonder what on earth has happened there?

wow, not been there in a long time. used to be very media/ad industry. everyone on the chisel. like you say, doubt they would've closed it for that alone though

One of the best sound systems in London. Maintained it's edginess. Dark, sweaty and deviant. I also hadn't been in years, but I will mourn its loss

Last month we went to The Yard in Manchester, not a “club” as such. It was an afternoon session 4-10pm and was only £8 entry with Danny Howells and Steve Parry headlining. Nice atmosphere but it only was half full! I just don’t think the “kids” want that club experience as much anymore, i understand the target audience was an older crowd but it was only £8. I mean, it was £12 to get into the Hac 30 years ago and WHP is not much change out of 50 rips.

I believe Steve Parry is a mate/co-promoter with board good egg @onemore

We went to The Yard for a night last year. Great friendly place. It’s a multi use venue so not just counting on club nights to keep it open. Also receives arts council funding. Seems like a good idea to foster young talent in the current environment.

agreed.
I’ve only been twice, both this year; they do some great events there. Was just highlighting the small crowd on that particular night for a “club” event.
Great sound in there too, did you find that?
