we had a tortoise once, when we first bought him he was dead quiet, but once he got to know us he really came out of his shell!!!

no, they just chill out around the garden and make excellent bbq hosts!

We (Mambo and Me) were told that back in the day (1950's), that Tortoises were given away to kids, if they gave the rag and bone enogh rags that contained wool.
Now theres a fact for ya.

I have one and I've not been arrested yet.
It is illegal to import them though, you can only get the European species via breeders in the UK.
The are protected under worldwide CITES law.

In the 80's over 20Million were imported from Greece,Turkey, Spain,etc.Apparently they used to litterally collect them via bulldozer and send them over in crates to other parts of Continental Europe for people to buy as pets

The banning of this practice is a good example of positive change in our world
