Top DJs say ibiza "too expensive"

I don't think ticket prices make a huge difference. If you went to see an Afrojack show in your home town how much would you pay? Surely its at least £30? And how does it compare to Vegas/Miami? Plus factor in flights and accommodation?

Afrojack is moaning that Ibiza has lost its soul? He says he only plays there because it pays so well? Its muppets like him that are doing the damage!

Afrojack made $18M last year! There is a reason for that he charged a lot of money!

There are some good points made by Steve Angello (even if there is a bit of pot / kettle / black about it):

According to Steve Angello, it's a shift in the way the clubs operate.

"Everybody is trying to do the same thing because at the end of the day, everybody is trying to sell tickets," he said.

"Five years ago, you would play Space if you wanted to play techno, you would pick Pacha if you wanted to play house.

"You would go to another venue if you wanted to play something else.

"So what happens is now a DJ gets an offer from five clubs, whereas 10 years ago you would only get offers from one club."

That is because DJs have become the main attraction over the past five years. They are now the rock stars.

This is actually a good point. All of the venues (mainly Pacha, Amnesia and Ushuaia) want their House, Underground and Techno nights. They all want to cater for everyone and want the best bits of all three pies. In fact I would argue it is Ushuaia who have just gone for the full on EDM pie this year and it's working for them.

My view (and we all debate this time and time again) is that House and Underground are as strong as EVER on Ibiza. But we have this this dimension that is just POP MUSIC. EDM is POP, Period, and we are struggling to accept this as part of the scene in Ibiza. Ushuaia is now just a pop concert hall. Nothing wrong with that, but let's not say the rest of the island is suffering musically as a result: it isn't. It's just putting on pop concerts every night of the week (minus ANTS) and it's working.

Another good quote:

"EDM is entering the punk phase," explains Marlon Flohr, one half of Bassjackers.

"The kids just want to jump and rage and it's like big festivals. There's stage diving, crazy stuff going on, it's not grooving any more, it's like straight up raging."

Agree. 100%. Just look at the pictures Ushuaia stream every day. Everybody facing the stage waving phone at the popstar on the stage.

Ibiza now has a World Class House, Underground and Pop/EDM scene, and all are at the top of their cycle commercially (even what we term the 'underground')... We just have to accept that.

Ticket prices are SKY high for the Pop Shows that the article talks about. Ticket prices for many other nights are slightly down I'd say, or the same as ever. Pacha offer cheap rates for June, their Ibiza Rocks party (pure House) is less than 35€. Its the popstars: Guetta, Hardwell and Avicci that are charging 75€...

Couple of things -

Haven't prices always been like that, at least for the past decade or more? I know they've crept up a bit, but not ahead of inflation surely? Clubbing in Ibiza has always been expensive.

Not sure if Radio 1 have done this on purpose, if so I'm not sure if it's a good thing. Part of me obviously thinks it's damaging for the island to have bad publicity, but if I'm honest, a lot of me thinks this is BRILLIANT, because it keeps the kids away. Radio 1's demographic is kids into the more commercial side of dance music, they're only interested in the big names, most just want to go on holiday to get pissed with their mates. Keep them in Magaluf or Malia. It works for us, it works for them too as they don't wind up on an expensive island and suddenly realise it's mostly house and trance DJs they've never heard of!

Either way, good journalism there, intentional or not. A bit bloody stupid to post it up right before their own weekend on the island mind...

Also, it's a bit off topic but it's a real bugbear of mine - Those DJ income figures posted are for total income of them as an entity. The actual amount they get personally is a hell of a lot less. Still a lot, but no where near that much.

I agree there hasn't been a huge hike in prices recently and drinks in the club's have always been expensive.

You pay what you think is right for what you want to see. When you think of guys like U2, Prince and the rolling stones charging £100 plus for a concert ticket to play for 90 minutes in comparison then Ibiza is a bargain!

Not been a time in my life where I'd have paid that to go to a pop or rock concert. Even scaled back for inflation. So it's a market I've never understood and likely never will.

Ibiza has always been on the expensive side but it can as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be, same as anywhere else. As for afrocockweasel saying its "lost is soul" well you obviously are not looking in the right places.

Also would like to point out that big name DJs charge roughly the same anywhere as they do in Ibiza.

I think when Hardwell played the Warehouse Project tickets were about £40. His nights at Ushuaia are about £43 (depending on exchage rate). Now I had a damn good time at the Warehouse Project, but I'd certainly pay the extra £3 to have same experience in an open air club, in Ibiza, as the sun is setting, rather than in a rundown old warehouse in Salford!

Ive never had a problem paying 40/50 euros for a night out, as someone already said, you'd pay that to go and see your favourite band at a concert etc. The problem for me and most id say is the ridiculous amount of money they charge for drinks once inside. Personally I don't think theres any need tbh, what with the over the top VIP space/room taken up in most clubs on the island nowadays. Yes charge over the average price for drinks etc but 12 euros for a bottle of beer is taking the piss.

They still get you with the water charges. Unless you want to risk your life dehydrating ....
