Defeated Tory leader Michael Howard announced his resignation this afternoon. His dramatic and unexpected statement came 18 months to the day since he took over the party.

Mr Howard said he was too old, at 63, to lead the Conservatives through four years of opposition and into government.

Interesting... too old to lead the opposition but not too old to lead the country? :? Is he saying he would have been a max 1 term PM?

Scoobie posted that on the Third Term thread a while ago. On UK radio he said it's best that the new leader is in place sooner rather than later, so that the Tories are in with a chance in 4/5 years time.

Give the man his due, he's has admitted that he didn't do what he set out to do and so therefore he's failed!!
 
Oops.. sorry. I thought I had been following the Third Term post closely enough but I guess I missed that part.

Definitely the right thing to do. It gives another person time to get established before the next election. I expect Blair will step aside too before his term is up to give his sucessor (Brown?) a good run at it.

I think not! Unless he's made to (which is possible now).
 
Why not? That's the whole advantage of the parliamentary system. You can step aside, let another person from your party take the spotlight and headlines, and help him/her get elected.

Can't do that with a presidential system (though the vice president does have some advantages, unless his name is Al Gore)
