This Ibiza virgin had the best vacation ever...

My very first trip over there and I spent just over a week. I really should've stayed a few more days. I also made the mistake of not planning very much ahead of time; I just tried to make it up as I went along and thus missed out on a lot. I only went to the 7 mega-clubs, and none of the others. And of those 7, I only went to each one once. But what I did do, I thoroughly enjoyed so I can't complain! Here's the club nights I went to:

Cream Ibiza @ Amnesia, 28 July
This was definitely a good choice for my first ever Ibiza club night! I got there around midnight and the club was relatively empty, but it filled up rather quickly. When I got there, Adam Sheridan was on the turntables in the main room, with Laidback Luke spinning the tracks in the terrace. I stuck to the main room that night and only popped into the terrace two or three times. By the time Eddie Halliwell took over, the place was pretty much packed; nearly every space that wasn't behind a bar had become the dancefloor. I was out there in the middle of it with my hands in the air, enjoying every second. Every now and then that ice cannon would fire its cold blasts, and when one is hot and sweaty that feels GOOD.

At about 2, Paul van Dyk took over, and all of us on the floor are losing ourselves in the moment. (although I would occasionally pop back over to the bar for another rum & Coke or vodka & Red Bull) I can't remember much specific, but I heard a lot of tracks I knew, including PvD's own "For an Angel," and a lot that I didn't.

After a few hours went by, though, I started to get tired, and I started to find myself leaning against pillars or sitting on steps just to rest. When you're in the middle of a packed nightclub with soul-penetrating music all around (not to mention ice cannons), AND you're sleepy at the same time, you know it's time to leave. I tried getting back on the dance floor but my arms, legs, and feet all felt like they were about to fall off. It took some willpower to get myself to leave though, because, well it's Ibiza! And Paul van Dyk in the DJ booth! But I did leave around 5 or so and caught a bus back to my hotel.

Fiesta del Agua @ Es Paradis, 29 July
A night I'll never forget! I had done my research ahead of time so I knew to bring a backpack with my swimsuit inside. When I first got in there, I really liked how the place was set up with the platforms and walkways and all. And plus when I first walked in "Insomnia" by Faithless was playing so I knew this was going to be a great night. After changing into my swimsuit and leaving my stuff with the gift shop attendant, I hit the floor (and the bars). The DJ, Steeve Valverde, played a lot of stuff with words people knew and could shout along with. Because of this, at the end of the night, not only were all my limbs tired but I had no voice left either.

At one point something weird happened. While I was standing back drinking one of my drinks, a girl comes up to me and says she wanted another drink but had run out of money. Ah, so...she's trying to get me to buy her one? This doesn't usually happen to me but OK. But as I'm about to offer to buy her another drink, she just pours a little bit of mine into her glass and walks off! Whatta hell?

So anyway from then it was uneventful until the prelude to the water part, where there's the girl showering in a bathtub suspended above the crowd. And then, the climactic moment of the night started when the water jets began filling up the center pit and for the next hour I was in that crowd jumping around in waist deep water. Definitely another lose-yourself-in-the-moment moment! People were dancing, jumping, splashing water everywhere...a few people sat on other people's shoulders too. There was also a lot more familiar music to be heard throughout this, some of which people could shout out the words to. Even "Calabria," but since no one actually knows the words to "Calabria" everyone just shouted along with the horn blasts. Best time I'd had so far.

You know how when you drop off your bag there, they put a wristband on your wrist and another around one of the bag's handles? My backpack still has the green wristband on it and I'm not taking it off until I go back next year.

This is getting to be long so I'll get to the rest later...

The most common "Ibiza Virgin" mistake to do is to turn up in an Ibiza Club before 2am. At least you will know for the next time:)

How did you find the disco bus experience from Cream?

Completly disagree with that, Bez.
I love getting to Cream about 1am. Catch the warm up DJs doing their thing.

And getting to Privilege on the big nights after 1am is a nightmare peak season

It looks like my real mistake was missing the disco bus!

Here's some more, even if they're a bit shorter than the last two.

Defected in the House @ Pacha, 30 July
I had a great time here too, loved the music, but there's not much to say since not much happened here that didn't happen at the other places. The big names that night were Junior Jack and ATFC. Actually, something did happen that hadn't happened before: I took pictures. Including this iconic photo I captured totally by accident:

Judgement Sundays @ Eden, 31 July
This was an awesome night. It was the first Ibiza club where I had a lot of random conversations with different people, and also the first and only place where I saw acrobats. Every club usually has their eye candy dancing on platforms, and Eden was no exception, but they also had acrobats and contortionists doing stunts above the crowd!

John O'Callaghan, Judge Jules, and Lisa Lashes all laid down some great tracks. I might add that the beachballs being tossed around were a nice touch.

Tiësto @ Privilege, 1 August
The biggest name I saw all week, in the world's biggest club! When I first stepped in I was blown away by the size of the place; it was almost, but not quite, as big as a stadium. At the beginning, a duo called Manufactured Superstars were manning the turntables, and I think they were a pretty good opening act. Like the last night, I started out hanging out at the bars making connections that never went anywhere, then headed further and further into the growing crowd. It was around when Tiësto took over that I was really in the middle of it, gradually working my way further forward until I was right in front of the stage. Now, since I had never been to any Tiësto gig before, I thought it was amazing, but I met people later that week who said that compared to what he's done in the past it wasn't all that great (including one who said he needs to pack it up and retire!). Still, it blew me away.

I stayed all the way till closing. After it was over I shared a cab with a guy from London, we took it back to the "egg" in San Antonio and had some beer at one of the few places still open there. After that I learned the hard way that cabs don't want to pick up people after 8 in the morning; I tried to flag down every empty cab I saw and the drivers just gave me some kind of hand sign and kept on moving.

Almost done...in the next post (Space, Cafe del Mar, and DC10) I'll finish things up.

Agree with Bez actually - I never hit a superclub before 2am (can't afford to at those drink prices !) ... have been very lucky for a year or so - never wound up in a long queue anywhere. Openings/closings may be different.

btw .. Spotlight tix advance purchase entrance @ DC-10 well worth it. Dodged a hefty q there earlier on in the evening. Space entry much quicker with full price tix bought on the island from a ticket bar. Queue on Tuesday just after 2am was about 1 minute. Was the same in July. Guest list entrance had a noteworthy wait.

Great to hear such enthusiastic reviews from yet another Ibiza virgin. Looking forward to the remaining ones .. before your memory fades ! ;)

I really don't fancy the water thing, I don't want anything claustrophobic or drowny while I'm dancing!

There were a few times when I started to lose my balance and almost fell under...I didn't though, fortunately!

Speaking of unpleasant things about the water, since this is the floor of a club this happens on, all the stuff that people have dropped throughout the night will float on the surface after the pit fills up. Things like empty glasses, straws, glowing bracelets, and...was that a condom I saw?

I still loved it though!

Dammit dammit dammit, I had spent I don't know how long typing the last part, only to lose it when first, I had to log in again because I'd been automatically logged out (I expected that), but then get an error message saying login failed because I'm already logged in (???). I'll try again tomorrow...

i had the same problem, i spent an hr and a half writing up a long review when i got bak mid august, went to press 'submit' then it said i wasnt logged in when i was... so i lost everything.

Happened to me a few times.

Option 1 - Use the "Keep me logged in " function.

OPtion 2 - Pre write on Word.

Option 3 - Type faster than James Bond.

Carl Cox @ Space, 2 August
Well...if you've read josephashton's review of the same night, you already know how part of this went down, since I was the other Spotlight member he mentioned meeting up with. We met at the Café del Mar, which I thought was a nice place with a great view, even though I expected a little more than just a bar and gift shop. Great music though! I'd heard that it was the birthplace of chillout music, which I hadn't heard much of before, but after being there I knew I had to buy some CDs there before leaving.

We stopped by a nearby outdoor restaurant, Mint, which is right next to Café Mambo. Great food there, and plus there was a British girl going around giving massages. For how much? "Whatever you feel it's worth." I paid something like 10 or 15 Euros; it may have been worth a little more but that was all the cash I had left at that point.

So the next stop was Space, for Carl Cox's weekly Tuesday night Revolution. If you've read that other review, you know how this started off...I got a drink and then went and hit on a "homely" girl...you know, she was sitting there alone at a little table, looking like she
was falling asleep and I just had to do something about that :) Well after talking and dancing and stuff she ended up leaving without me. Attempts to replicate the situation with a more favorable outcome were unsuccessful. So, I decided to head off into the dancefloor and the music.

This is embarrassing to admit but I actually got lost in this club! Really, after spending time in the terrace and a smaller room I couldn't find my way back to the main room, I just kept going back and forth between the other two. I did make it back after a while to catch the rest of Cox's set. But it looks like I missed a lot, because I did some searching on YouTube after coming home to find other people's videos of the club nights I was at, and apparently while I was messing around in the other rooms, this "electric man" was out in the main room. What I did experience was impressive though. At all the other parties I'd been to, I never saw any kind of laser light show. But Carl Cox had one throughout his set and it was quite amazing. I wish there was something I could say about the music but I just didn't immerse myself in it nearly as much as the previous nights. Still enjoyed it though, I stayed till closing which was later than the other nights I was out.

From Disco to Techno @ DC10, 3 August
This was going to be my seventh and last club night. My plane was going to leave the next morning, so I figured I could catch one last club party, leave around 3, check out of the hotel and go right to the airport and then sleep on the plane. Originally I was going to do Be at Space, but then changed my mind to DC10 when I realized that since there was only one more big club left to hit, and one more night, may as well finish the tour.

Right away when I got there I could tell this was a very different atmosphere than the other 6 clubs. While the others had been in a more urban setting, this one felt like it was in the middle of nowhere. I have to admit I didn't like it much while I was there--and it didn't help that a fight broke out that night--but looking back I can see the appeal and I'll probably go there once more next time I'm on the island.

I got a drink at one of the bars outside. I went inside for a while...I liked the music but didn't recognize any of it. After hanging around the bars inside I went back out. I pretty much stuck to the outside portion from then on since the inside got so packed it looked impossible to move. Outside it was much easier to have a conversation.

The plan was to leave either at 3, or sooner if I met someone to leave with (and let's be honest, that's what I was hoping for). Well neither happened and I ended up leaving around closing and missing my flight.

(Whoever it was who got me that cab, thank you!)

And that's about it! I experienced a lot that week, missed out on even more, but like I said in the beginning I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can't complain. I had been making a list of various exotic locations I could travel to next year, but screw it I'm going back to Ibiza. And next time, I'll hit up some boat parties, pre-parties, after-parties, music bars, beaches, and I'll try to bring as many more people as I can. Or just go alone if they all refuse.
