Thieving HSBC bar stewards

just got charged £100 for unwittingly going over my account 4 times by a meagre 3 days.

"why does my card still get accepted?"

because its yr responsibilty to know how much is in the acccount and we do not offer a card which declines when there is insufficient funds.

anyone switched to somewhere sensible, that keeps you informed by txt or something how much cash you havent got?

I disagree. You should know how much money you have got in your account, and the movements of your money in and out.

I know exactly how you feel Chewie... don't go to Nationwide, they are exactly the same. I have a spare current account which I put £100 a month in just for extra cash etc. Unbeknown to me I'd spend too much from this account and gone below the £0 mark, so rather than stopping my card from working, they gave me a £50 overdraft (which I never even asked for :x ). I then got charged £20 for having an unauthorised overdraft, and £20 for going over my non authorised limit!!!!
I got no letters confirming this, nothing to tell me I'd even been given an overdraft, let alone was being charged for it.
I carried on using my card, and it was working so I presumed I had enough money in there. I done the same the next month and got charged another £40!!!!
When I checked my statement I was amazed that I was getting all these oevrdraft charges for something I'd never even asked for :spank: :x . They told me I should have checked my statements more and kept a better eye on my account.... ok maybe I should have checked it more but it's not my main account, it was sposed to be a little savings account I dip into when I need it, I ended up paying out more in charges on the funking thing than was going in it! :x

I'm closing the account this week btw

lemme know who u switch to.

ok, i should really know how much is in there, BUT, a little help from the bastards when u have little or no funds would be nice.

I tell everyone I know (cos this is coming from the worst ever person with cash - "How can I be skint when I still have cheques left in my cheque book????")

First Direct - best bank I have ever been with (and I have been with quite a few in my working life - I have been a bank whore!!) They are so cool, they know people f**k up with cash every now and again, they call me up when I am about to go overdrawn and say "Oh would you like us to transfer some of your savings across to avoid bank charges Madam?" - how cool is that - someone who pre-empts my daftness with a solution before it actually happens.....

i tell ya what the irony of this is. First Direct are a member of the HSBC group!

I know - but they far surpass their sister company HSBC.... When we needed to open a business account with First Direct last year, they couldnt help us, but put us on to HSBC..... we declined and went elsewhere....

Why don't you lovely people use internet banking? :? If you can use Ibiza-Spotlight then you should be intelligent enough to use internet banking. :D You don't necessarily have to spend money through the internet if you're still scared. 8O But, you can keep a check on your account at any time of the day and night, and better than your statements, it's bang up to-date. :D You can also move money from one bank to another if you so wish, it's so easy these days.

I use Barclays, Abbey & Nationwide and can access all three accounts via the 'net............ useful if you're abroad and need to transfer money from one account to another.

Oh, a little tip: I use Nationwide to dump money into for going abroad. Why? Because they don't charge for drawing money from the ATMs abroad...........and best of all..........you get the business exchange rate for the Euro when abroad............meaning you get more Euros for your ££££'s. Whoo Hoo! :p

Yup - First Direct are like Nationwide - I do all my travel insurance with them, which means I just take my money out of any bank when on holiday and dont get charged for it too - bonus - no messing around with travellers cheques, ordering currency before you go etc.... it also covers me for my mobile phone, and all sorts of daft things like that which is necessary whilst in Ibiza.. (buggers rang me up in Ibiza in Sept to check my account and to ask if I had used my cards the day before in Newcastle, Liverpool, Liverpool Airport, and Ibiza as they were worried someone had nicked my cards and were having a fine old time!! - now that's customer service!!

They are great to use online too - I do all my banking whilst at work, and they send text messages to tell you when payments are going in and out so its pretty easy to keep on eye on current funds....

Don't talk to me about HSBC.

We've banked (business) with them for 15 years and approached them for a £0.5m bridging loan sometime late last year and they never even got back in touch! Their loss, they could have made a fair bit of interest of that.

Took my business to Barclays instead who were more than willing to oblige.

Stay away fron Nat West. I got a letter a couple of months ago telling me that "As a loyal customer you are entitled to a credit limit increase. Your new credit limit will be £1000. If you do not wish to take up this offer at this time please let us know in writing by 13/10/2005". The letter arrived on 12th October. When I rang to complain, the disinterested tosser on the other end of the phone just kept stating that I should've declined in writing. It took a very irate threat of cancelling my account before they took the overdraft back down to it's original limit of..........£250!!!

I totally agree.

I always keep track mentally, and every month put all transactions into Quicken on the computer.

Having a rough budget worked out in your head each month isn't such a bad idea either.

This issue came up in a thread once before, but having a rough budget worked out in your head each month isn't such a bad idea either.

i do do that, and if im over my bad.

but the fact that i can keep swiping the frigging card is the thing that annoys me!

Fair point... but no bank is ever going to make it easy on you no matter how much they promise to. They're out to make some $€

1. Set up a spreadsheet showing all your outgoings.
2. Use this to work out how much 'spend' you have for the month.
3. Put that figure in your mobile and just keep reducing that figure each time you withdraw.

I've not been overdarwn for years. 8)

Now we can both laugh at those feeble-minded fools paying unauthorised overdraft fees. Aaaahhhhh it's great to be winning for a change.

had to double check that they do everything (credits/debits) at the end of working days.

my mate got done by halifax for being 14p over his limit, cos a debit went out b4 a credit!

he managed to get it overturned by not losing his rag down phone liuke 99% of people.

Discovered last night they pulled another fast one.

A couple of months ago, they called me up and asked if i was interested in transferring some monies into a high interest deposit account. Being as i was quite flush, i said "yeah, as long as i can access it" so they asked how much i would be prepared to put on one side, which i replied "£5,000?" so they said "ok, we'll send out some forms".

I received the forms, but didn't bother filling them in - threw them away infact.

Then, i went online last night to check that our new mortgage company's DD were coming out ok to find HSBC had transferred the £5k without my consent!

Cheeky barstools!

So, i've now got to go to my local branch (which isn't local to work) to sort it.
