The Rise in "upmarket" Hotels

Is it annoying you? PDB is quickly turning into Miami... prices going up hotels being bought out and turned into beach clubs

There are no, repeat no, decent good value hotels in PDB now.

I used to be a big fan of the place, families mixing with clubbers etc.........

Its San An for me these days, and that's not said easily.

I think the Hard Rock thing will surprise some people in terms of the people that it will attract! This is NOT another Ushuaia with bands. And it is NOT competing with "Ibiza Rocks". I envisage it will be a mix of clubbers, families, and all in between. Look at any other Hard Rock hotel pictures to understand what I mean....

However, I appreciate it won't be cheap!

sun apartments? ok, not a hotel as such, but quality/price ratio is pretty good i'd say.

Stivi,
I'm not so sure? As a solo traveller (which is more likely to be the case from now on) I don't think there is anything that offers the value for money of San An now. I used to like Club Bahamas but that's gone downhill somewhat. On the flip, I cant afford Garbi which could be an option in the past.

If I can get places like Hostal Valencia or Gran Sol on a solo for 40-50 euro per night I can port the difference over from a PDB stay to pay for a hire car and fuel.

What's your take on PDB as a family resort these days?

Places need diversity, but the constant expansion of this type of accommodation is taking over? There is clearly a market for it.

true DSD, solo traveller thing is always a bit tricky - and never cheap. didn't consider the solo travel factor. yet I still think your statement is very general and there are definitely still affordable accom options available in PdB. sure, san an's got cheaper offers, but the places in PdB can apparently afford to ask for their prices - they're always busy.

the south end hotels on Playa d'en Bossa are still totally OK for families (the palladium palace and the bahamas), but apart from that, PdB isn't focussing on families at all these days - at least that's my impression

Is it really taking over? I think it is because the area is so high profile that we get carried away. At the end of the day if all the hotels from Ushuaia down to the Palladium become upmarket this is still a tiny fraction of the overall beds in Ibiza.

Also, most of us just look at this from a clubbing perspective. Hard Rock Hotel could have the potential to be all year resort if the Golf Club thing gets built etc. And I am still glad that it's a brand like Hard Rock.... imagine it had been a Marriott or Holiday Inn or Hilton etc. Thankfully none of those brand have yet made it to Ibiza...

Personally I think the development is all good as will help the island tourism all year (but I say that as an outsider so my view doesn't really count).

I think all the upmarket hotels are ruining PDB, I stayed there for the first time in around five years the last time I went and the atmosphere is totally different. You can feel the place is oozing with money! I much prefer San An, the place just feels friendlier !

Just a general survey -

What prices do peeps on here call reasonable?

As my visits are generally in addition to other family holidays, my budget suffers somewhat. In saying that though, why do i need the "Ritz" when I'm hardly in the room and it is only required for the three S's and 4 hours sleep?

Mine is £50 per night (room).

(In contrast - 2012 I got Palladium Palace AI for £75 pppn on a family holiday in August. That wont be the price now I bet?)

i pay £1100 for two weeks a/i..i must say since fiesta group sold off some off there s/c places early 2000;s.and gps took over the bigger and smaller s/c places the number of faimlys as really dropped.but i do say its good that alot of hotels have at least had a refit to be a bit more modern.i mean some of the hotels are over 25 to 30 years old.over the 15 years i;ve stayed in pdb.lots of bars have closed or had to change to cater for the people that now go.years ago you could not walk on pavement for prams.now all you get is p/a.s and lucky men blocking your path.
once the bull bar was packed every night.and when it closed we knew something was happening to the resort.i just feel sorry for es vive area.which was once buzzing.but like i said once lido miro molo etc closed or changed hands.the shops and bars started to close.but it just shows you there are plaenty of people willing to pay £1500 a week just for bnb.

It started to change towards that a few years ago and the main factor i think is Ushiaya and that the economy recovered.

I think in five years prices are up 50-100% in the area? Accomodation is very hard too. Used to be relatively easy to get good three star places.

The original thread said that PDB was being ruined by the "upmarket" hotels. What is the definition of "ruined"?

While I appreciate people are being priced out of the lower part of it.... The place is booming! 3,000 people in Ushuaia some nights, Space getting sell out Coxy nights, getting 8,000 through the door on some ENTER. Nights! While not everyone can stay there anymore it is far from ruined.

My view is that the "up-market" will continue to grow, especially as the economy continues to slowly grow through 2014-16. While many claim that it's the San Trop crowd I've found that a hell I a lot of people that stay at Ushuaia are late 20s / early 30s people who came to Ibiza at 18 in San An and now earn money that enables them to stay in more luxury.

This expansion is just as much about a wider demographic change. People get married later and even when they do settle they refuse to completely give up this lifestyle. Pete Tong's afternoon / beach night at Ushuaia was an example of this in my view. Never seen such a cross section of ages and type of people.
