What getsgot me wondering was this, the 'good old days' of Ibizan clubbing (forgive the term, I know there are good nights still going, but y' get the picture) often refer to the great mix of people there, non judgemental & from all walks of life. Very egalitarian & on the face of it what good clubbing people would appear to aspire to.

However in the same breath, anything percieved as 'cool' nowadays, has to be 'exclusive' or you must be 'in the know'.

Now forgive me for my cynicism, but my experience of 'in the know' generally means the exact opposite of that egalitarian ideal. The same gang, coined up,coked up, denying access to their place to the less 'cool'. Would it appear that cool of now is the antithesis of what the 'original' cool was. knowwhatimean?

I was just thinking, when I read the Terry Farley article & he talks about the 'girl from greggs' in disparaging terms - what happens if she is the safest, soundest person ever? Is it not ibizan to play out with her due to her background?

F uck me i've droned on, be interested in if you think perception has changed.

well exactly. back home we have our run of Manchester but always end up in the fiddlers (thats my local btw).

i'm not a bitter man - (just to be clear!) - I have lost track of the articles banging on about the 'secret' or 'in the know' yada yada yada - and the lifestyle companies promising access to 'exclusive' events - so exclusive that it just takes money to get in Mr C Chester? Surely all you need is music and a smile.

It seems almost biblical - becoming a caricature of its own excess - like the stock market for instance - lost the whole point of its original existence (that is for nice people to have fun in the sun & to raise capital / share risk etc, as opposed to a giant casino).

time for a glass of wine then bed me thinks!

I think I am the uncoolest person I know, I like the sentiments expressed in your first paragraph, keep your exclusive/vip crap,if you are there for the music you don't need it...:D

so if understand this correctly, uncool is the new cool, or is it the other way round?

I am completely uncool and was a bit hesitant when going to Cream in June. It was the only night we plucked up the courage to go clubbing and I was just so amazed at how non-judgemental it was there with people wearing whatever they felt like and dancing rather than posing. I hate going out in London and feeling like I shoudnt be there coz I'm not a size 8 and wearing Prada so we're heading back to Ibiza in a couple of weeks and am hoping our Cream experience wasn't a fluke.

My take on this is that if you actually CARE about being cool you will seek out those exclusive parties and make a point of going somewhere simply because you want to say you've been somewhere different. It all seems a lot of effort. If you just go along and have a good time, all those posers will be green with envy deep down that they are to uptight to relax themselves (and hiding it behind their designer sunglasses).

where do you go clubbing in london?

what you have described is similar to what many people experience when they first go to REAL house music events.

gareth, please shut the funk up.

if you like something go there and have fun.

if someone who you perceive to be cool tells you about something (e.g. a band like sigur ros), then go have a gander and try it.

i was only 17, but one of funniest things i ever did in my life was the water party at es paradis. i couldn't think of anything i'd rather do less now but so what, it was great at the time.

to be honest, i'm fed up with poncing about in the VIP/booth. the other week at cream, i walked across the terrace when prdyz was on and the energy in the centre of the floor was amazing, it took me back 10 years and reminded me of why dance music gripped me.

you should try looking for that feeling rather than what is meant to be cool.

i think you've missed my point there as we share exactly the same sentiments. hey ho..
