The Other Side of the Island...

Good chat with Be.Lanuit. He's right that you can't really disentangle 80s Ibiza from what was happening on mainland (esp Valencia) which I don't think a lot of balearic scholars explore nearly enough.

I was watching this yesterday and this same thought came to mind. The refinement of traditional eclectic music into what is called Balearic, and some kind of timeline would be interesting to hear and learn about.

do you remember his rock star phase?

IIRC he alluded to that in the video. Will read your blog now.

based on what I've heard and read, the word balearic did not exist in any musical sense until UK label FFRR put out that compilation "balearic beats vol 1". Until then, the island DJs had played whatever they could get their hands on ie the physical imports that were in the shops at the time so the randomness wasn't so much deliberate as the product of sheer luck. It certainly wasn't a scene as such and no different to how radio across Spain would've embraced foreign pop music at the time. My guess is that most of the vinyl imports across Spain were coming in via one distributor. and that you were basically spoonfed whatever was there.
