Trance DJs continue to dominate DJ Magazine's Top 100 year after year, why do you think the genre remains so enduringly popular?
Trance is the ultimate big room/arena sound, and therefore gets exposed to a very large audience at all the major events around the world, hence the large support in the polls.

And why do you think it continues to attract such snobbery from critics and some clubbers into other styles?
Popularity breeds contempt in some quarters (although not these...)

Your new artist album is due out soon what's the vision for it? (how much trance features on it?
It's all trance influenced, with some more conventional trance offerings, plus slower and more techy trance, still with trance undertones.

Any public enemy style rage and hip hop? (given that it's called Bring The Noise - how long did you take deciding the title, how did you arrive at it?)
I loved Public Enemy as a kid, but that wasn't the influence... To be honest, someone emailed me and suggested it.

Why did you decide to collaborate with Jonty Skrufff on one track; how did that happen? What's your connection with him?
I've been featuring sections from Jonty's essential weekly online news piece Skrufff for many years, and we got friendly that way, and I've watched his dj career take off big-time, with tune making the natural next step.

How important to you in priority terms is the album? Why is it more significant than releasing a bunch of singles?
I guess as a dj/artist an album tells folk a lot more about your broad musical identity than a single ever could.

Why do you think so few dance producers have succeeded in making timeless masterpiece albums compared to rock?
Lack of radio friendly songs that can be packaged into convenient three minute edits, as a starter.

What drives you to continue working so hard? Have you ever come close to burning out? (either physically or mentally?) Have you ever had gigs when you've just thought 'I'm too exhausted to play?)
Never... I love what I do, and I hope that comes across when people see me play. Doing the job you love overcomes any exhaustion.

Does it get any easier to sustain success over time (or harder?)
Harder I guess.

THE TRANCE AWARDS ARE COMING...!!

An unprecedented number of trance music fans have made themselves heard in the 4th annual Trance Awards poll and now all roads lead to the road-block ceremony at The Gallery this Friday at Ministry of Sound. Some 20,000 fans of trance music and culture have made their mark this year in the annual global barometer of popularity in the scene and mouths are watering with anticipation for the golden envelopes to open in a few days time! Votes have come in from 125 countries around the world, which once again gives the poll its much-vaunted international perspective. All the industry and fans are focusing on the ceremony to see just who has done the damage on a global scale over the last twelve months in the realms of production, promotion and performance.

To tide you over until then............

TALL PAUL INTERVIEW
Courtesy of www.clubtickets.com

At what point did you go from Paul to Tall Paul?
A nickname that stuck in 1990.

I was chatting to Steve Lavinière (from Bobby & Steve) who told me "short djs are better, they're closer to the decks, closer to the crowd. You've got your ear to the ground." What's your response to that?
It’s the only possible response from a short person sufferer. Who wants to be head height with the mixer when there are all them beautiful people dancing in front of you to look at!!

Do you wake up in the morning and think wistfully about Turnmills or are you over it?
Over it, but still reminisce, it was a big part of out lives for so long.

How has the move to MoS been? What have been the advantages/disadvantages?
The move has gone better than expected. Advantages - a very nice sound system to work with. Disadvantages – Haven’t got keys to all the doors anymore!!

Why is the Gallery called the Gallery?
From what I can remember it was the way we wanted to present the flyers and adverts and brand, with the Djs in a picture frame being presented in a Gallery/Museum environment. (I think that was it)

Do you paint or otherwise engage in visual artistic endeavour?
No, Danny’s the one for all that (Paul’s brother and Gallery promoter)

When was the last time you went to an art Gallery? If you have, what exhibition was it and what did you think?
There was a Picasso exhibition in my hotel in Abu Dhabi. It was very impressive... did you know when he died the French government took 45% of his art in death duty because the family couldn’t afford to pay the inheritance tax and he was Spanish. Good old French...

Have you won awards? If so, what were they and how did you feel?
A few best Dj awards over the years and a few for the records and remixes. They are all in my office gathering dust.

What makes a toon hooj?
All the right elements in all the right places.

Define trance...
An ever changing definition.

Why has the sound been so big for so long?
It has a certain appeal to the popular clubber, who is more likely to get exposed to Trance there first time clubbing.

Tell us something about Judge Jules we don't know?
Surely you know everything?...

What are you doing for Christmas/New Year?
Christmas, big family one. New years - Godskitchen and The Gallery NYE @ Ministry of sound with Above & Beyond, Danny Howells, Sister Bliss and Anil Chawla – don’t miss it!

Anything else you'd like to add?
Thanks to all who followed us from Turnmills to the Ministry and didn’t get lost.

And why do you think it continues to attract such snobbery from critics and some clubbers into other styles?
Popularity breeds contempt in some quarters (although not these...)

it's not because it's popular, you TIT - it's because it's steaming kak, aimed at mongs
