from the ibiza sun:

Drugs Promise
The Consell Insular announced on Friday that they are to hold a conference on the dangers of "clubbing" tourism. Around 400 experts will converge on the island in June (23rd-25th) to discuss the dangers of this type of tourism, and what can be done to eradicate it.
The alarm bells started to ring at the Consell earlier this summer when a survey conducted by students at John Moores University, Liverpool, at Ibiza airport revealed that over 20 per cent of those questioned came to the island for the drugs.
The conference will discuss subjects including alcohol abuse, the use of recreational drugs, night-time violence, the management of bars and clubs and emergency first-aid. The results of the three day summit will be noted by the Consell, and action will be taken to try and eradicate this type of tourism and clean up the image the island currently has abroad.
The minister for public health, Patricia Abascal, said she wanted the island to be known as a family, leisure, cultural and ecological destination, but at the moment the image was being darkened by a much more sinister type of tourism which brings more disadvantages than benefits.

Wow...these guys are sharp!!

"The alarm bells started ringing earlier this summer"

Um and where have you guys been for the previous 20 odd years when people have been coming to Ibiza "for Drugs" as you so succinctly put it!

ffs - what a load of sh1t! do they really think people need to travel all that way to get high? It's all about the MUSIC!! the rest comes with it 8O8O 8)

... conference on the dangers of "clubbing" tourism.

do they offer guided tours (like 80s-sighseeingtours to the bronx)
to dc10, space, etc to experience the horrors of "clubbing" live?

...

what a nonsense - these guys must have been freshman students
instructed by mr. j.m. bar :-)

Don't u realize?! Family & Co. isn't even interested in Ibiza; they go other places ... Ibiza already has its reputation. And it's good that way  ... sure, drugs r everywhere ... they use it as their main argument ... **** 'em!
It's gonna take them a while, if they REALLY wanna change the island ... seasons without earnings would pass ... and nobody likes a season without profit!
Nothings gonna happen ...

@ Stephen

All right ... I got dissapointed yesterday while reading ... might be!
But it's the clubbers, that have made the island the way it is.
They can't just "overwalk" us!
Besides, statistics can be fake. Especially, if it's their statistics.
Everybody "builts" and creates his/her own statistic that supports
ones oppinion.
On the long side, they'll regret their abandoning (is is written that way? :?:) decission if it comes that way ... .
Greetz to you stephen :D:D

an easy way is to use the power of mathematics.

13 week clubbing season * capacity of the clubs = number of clubbers (400,000ish)

visitors to ibiza 2m ish

therefore 80% are not clubbers.

obviously it's a body count. as i understand it the international recreational drug traders don't yet file p&l accounts with the tax authorities.

So when you say 'statistics show', we're talking more along the Nu-Labour or Face Cream advert levels of accuracy?!

And that's ignoring the fact that surely from a viewpoint of analyzing the people that "bring u the real benjamins", by a body count is disingenuous at best, no?

And if we're talking from the Govts PoV, what will happen to all the jobs out there? It's not all done by mini-grego's over from the UK...Tho I suppose I'm digressing here...

Point completely taken on the carpets n rugs front. In fact I'd be amazed if the clubs were anywhere near squeaky clean with their tax returns. Wasn't it Dazza Emerson that used to smuggle suitcases full of cash back to the UK strapped to his body?

i actually get my statistics from inestur (the institute for tourist strategy) but i find my rough calculation usually suffices.

i think we're getting to the stage in ibiza now - as borne out by the staggering political turnaround last may - where people are more concerned about how the island is rather than how much money sloshes through a few people's bank accounts.

it was the cream mob who exported bags of cash every week btw.

What do you and the people you talk to every day think Stephen? Not so much the drugs, I'll take that as read, but the clubbers (amusing sunglasses and hats aside)?

This arguement comes up in 60% of all threads (sorry can't prove this statistic). What's the issue here - clubbers vs ibiza residents, or clubbers vs well meaning supporters of ibiza residents, or clubbers vs the world? Or what??!!

i personally think this argument always comes up again because many clubbers think ibiza gets its money only or mainly from the clubbers - which is just wrong! stephen guessed about 20% of the people arriving in ibiza are clubbers. i had read an article some time ago that stated 25% were clubbers - still only a quarter of all tourists then!

Family & Co. isn't even interested in Ibiza
so how do you explain this:

 Where to Stay in Ibiza
"around a third of our visitors are British. The Brits number more than the Germans, the Italians, and even the Spanish who also arrive en masse during the season.
So, where do we all stay? Well it may come as a surprise to many people, given the hip and happening reputation of Ibiza, that family favourite Santa Eulalia came out tops with the British in 2006. Over 54% headed to Santa Eulalia and other resorts in the borough like Cala Llonga and Es Cana! Lively San Antonio attracted over 30% of British visitors whilst San Jose's resorts, including Playa den Bossa and San Antonio Bay got around 16%."

i could quote the rest of phrases on your post because you got them ALL wrong but i cant be bothered.....
