The great irony is, I'm always reading in the UK press about how bad privatization was in Russia and how it failed to benefit the "average citizen" while a handful of people got rich.
The thing is, most of the major enterprises that got privatized subsequently received investment, were restructured, and became improved companies (which is why their owners got rich). Privatization actually improved things and the economy is growing as a result (with other factors like commodity prices helping out, of course)
I haven't heard many people crowing about the benefits of privatization in the UK, nor do I know any "average citizens" who received direct benefit from the process. One of the reasons I think UK journalists are a bunch of hypocrites.
