Terrorists

You wouldn't want to be flying anywhere today.
Travellers are not allowed to take hand luggage on only passports, wallets and essential medicine - provided it's not in liquid form.
The warning from the Home Office states among other things that if you're travelling with a baby you can take baby food on board - but you will have to taste it in front of security first to show it's not poison or explosive.

It's possible the kind of thing they're worried about is nitro-glycerine, which is apparently undetectable by normal airport security equipment. An earlier plot to blow up planes over the Pacific involved nitro-glycerine.

Hair lotion and moisturisers are also banned from aeroplane cabins for this reason.

It's all very well panicking now, but it would help if current security measures were better. My friend just came back from Turkey and had a steak knife in her handbag!! It had fallen into her bag at dinner (it fell off the table, they couldn't find it and thought it had fallen through a gap in the decking). She had been through security (bag screening etc) and she was waiting at the gate when she found it.

the actual threat hasn't changed one bit, if anything it will be less likely at the moment cos of the risk of getting caught and the improbability of carrying out an attack. the only reason the perceived threat has risen is because some dudes have been caught. how many others are plotting as we speak that we don't know about.

its all a load of bollox, we are at war on several fronts, the threat is continual, persistent albeit clandestine and is exacerbated by our foreign policy.

Mmmm. Taste the baby food. That sounds like fun. Will they make you drink the formula too?

Jeez, that is a mess. No hand luggage, delays... hope none of you is travelling this weekend!

I'm supposed to be flying to Ibiza tomorrow night :(

Teh one thing I've noticed, is that it all seems very well publicised how well the (Met) Police are reacting to it, almost as if it's a convenient exercise to flex their 'muscles' as it were, possibly to restore faith in the Govts's/Police handling of such situations.

That said, I have my upmost respect for all staff (inc Airport) involved, and you certinaly won't hear a moan from me if my flight get's delayed a little.

neither was jjinit's post  ;)

I have a friend working at Gatwick - he got called out at 4AM this morning.... He says if you think the passengers are having a rough time... Try being a worker at the airport looking after thousands of really P*ssed off people....

The situation is sh*t.... jjinit...that's all I'm saying;)

Not being funny, but I wouldn;t have thought people intent on blowing up a plane they are travelling in probably aren't too orried about theior long term health.

Drinking a bit of battery acid is the least of their problems!

Ya, but most people planning on blowing up a plane probably wouldn't take their baby with them either!

your'e right it is getting tedious and as Grego points out above, until we distance ourselves from America/Israel and their foreign policies and say "actually.....Israel.....thats out of order" it's going to continue. We didnt indiscriminantly bomb Dublin to flush out the IRA did we? So why are we sitting by and let Israel do the same to Lebanon? what are we afraid of??

I'd prefer you didn't distance yourselves from America... but rather that America got her damn foreign policy right!

I think the majority of people in the world agree with you on Lebanon - like using a cannon on a fly. However, I don't think that was the root cause of this particular incident, even if it is (and I haven't heard that it is) used as a justification for this particular "plot".

Unfortunately that's just appeasement and it didn't work for Neville Chamberlain.

It certainly won't work with a bunch of death cultists who want to establish a - preferably global - totalitarian theocracy.

The last interview Osama Bin Laden gave to a Western journalist was done by the Independent's Robert Fisk in 1998. It's worth reading - particularly for the very clear way in which Bin Laden talks about "falling on the necks" of the infidel and "smiting" them wherever they may be.

The destruction of Israel would be just the start.
