Swp

I was disappointed in him for that. No excuse for it.

Don't think he was taught that at Chelsea though. Look how much less Joe Cole does that kind of thing than he did 2-3 years ago (though he's also still not immune)

Im not talking about Cole in particular, more Essien, Drogba, Robben........need I go on??

Essien doesn't dive. Drogba's problem is not diving but just being overtheatrical when he is brought down and rolling around like a big baby. Robben has some issues.

:x :x :x

i can't begin to describe how angry this makes me john and how wrong you have got it and how you could even begin to think this is true.

the whole point is that joe cole didn't use to do these things 2 or 3 years. 3 years ago he was still at west ham and its only since he arrived at chelsea a little over 2.5 years ago, that his diving/play acting/gamesmanship has developed.

face it morb, you have a team of them - gallas, makelele (subtle but the worst IMO), robben, drogba, gudjonnson, cole, carvalho, del horno (did it to scotty parker last night) and new recruit SWP. even terry is very 'aware' of things when he gets the slightest knick or feels like he should be awarded a free kick. the only person totally innocent is lamps IMO, only seen him dive once and that was for the pen at the end of last season where makelele scored.

makes me sick.

blame the manager.

look at Spurs under Martin Jol. have not seen any of our players go down like a sack of spuds since he's been in charge.

if you cheat, you cheat yourself, the fans, and the club. bolloxs to win at all costs, if my team wins anything, it'll be on merit, not cos they scored a pen by going down like theyve been hit by the kitten sniper in row z

so in other words drogba dives:roll:

Lets get one thing straight - diving is when you go down under no or minimal contact in order to get a foul.

Drogba usually only goes down under contact, which is fine. His crime is rolling around like a baby afterwards, which annoys me.

Grego - You are categorically wrong about Gallas, Makalele (with one sad exception in Monaco), Gudjohnsson, Carvalho. I won't argue the point with you. You are wrong.

Del Horno last night didn't dive, he fell down tripping over the ball. He should have got right back up, though, as his sitting there is what got the foul on Parker which was wrong.

Also, re: Joe Cole. I didn't watch many West Ham games before but when he arrived at Chelsea he used to collapse at the slightest contact so he certainly didn't pick up that habit with the Blues. He goes down MUCH less now.

And while SWP was the villain last night, he is generally a player who will do what ever it takes to run around defenders and stay on his feet so it is unfair to demonize him for one night of poor judgement.

You have been a football fan for about 5 minutes all these points are invalid.

my point was more about dirrrrrty gamesmanship than your encyclopedic definition of diving.

- gudjohnsson got alonso banned for the 2nd leg of the semi last year when TV clearly showed no contact
- carvalho goes down in the box at nearly every corner trying to kid the ref he has been fouled. i won't even start with what he gets up to defending corners
- if you think makalele doesn't do it then you're obviously seeing something diff from the rest of the world. the subtle, sly behaviour is all part of his game in terms of breaking play up and getting in the way of things. his whole game is about getting amongst it and conning free kicks out of the ref to stop attacks, if you're not aware of this then you know less about footy than i thought. you talk about minimal contact, just watch makalele go down or play for a free kick at the slightest touch, when he is like a rash himself over players but gets away with it cos he's sly (a lá franco baresi in his heyday)
- gallas has only started doing it recently..........maybe the clan has just finished with him and is now starting on SWP

I won't nitpick with you about the other players in your most recent post because they do nothing that other players in the EPL don't do, Liverpool players included, and none of them is a consistent offender.

But I will bite back on Makalele, as he is my favorite player. Yes, he is usually all over attacking opponents, because that's what he does. That's why he's one of the the best holding midfielders in the world.

He breaks up attacks by intercepting or stealing the ball. His next task is to try to distribute said ball. At this point, the attackers more often than not will try to get it back. If at this point he gets tripped, or he does the standard pass-the-ball-and-get-obstructed move, I call that fair play.

This season especially, most EPL managers have given players strict instructions to swarm Makalele (that was Keiren Dyer's job last night) so it's not surprising that he draws fowls.

And please stop this questioning my football knowledge every time we have a different view on a subject!! I have a different perspective, yes, but not a dearth of understanding.

No, not winding up  But I am biased. The truth is probably halfway between what I said and what Grego did.
