Ibiza Stinks : Crosstown Rebels & Kompakt present STINK @ DC10, Ibiza

Crosstown Rebels' Damian Lazarus and Kompakt Records' Michael Mayer have hosted Stink parties at the T Bar in London for the past six months. Stink has been responsible for some legendary sessions of forward thinking electronic music and all round tomfoolery.

This summer Stink will be relocating to Ibiza for a special nine week session. The promoters of Circo Loco have invited Crosstown Rebels and Kompakt to take over Friday nights at DC10 and bring a different flavour to the island. The guests lined up is a veritable whose-who of the leading lights of electronic music and promises to be something very special.

Damian Lazarus comments, "When Michael and I decided to launch a new party together after a heavy night out last summer and call it Stink, we never imagined we'd experience the ridiculousness of the parties that followed. We've created a beast at our home, the T Bar in London, and the offer to move the party to the inside of DC10 on Friday's for 9 weeks this summer was like a dream come true. We can't wait to put some heart and soul into our music in Ibiza and push the spirit of Stink forward"

Keep your eyes peeled for a limited edition Stink CD that will be given away free on the island. Mixed and compiled by Lazarus and Mayer, it will only be available when they DJ together at Circo Loco at DC10 on the 19th June.

Mayer and Lazarus stink up Ibiza

When Kompakt was launched off the back of the minimal thump of Wolfgang Voigt in the late nineties who could have imagined that the Cologne imprint would one day land itself an Ibiza residency?

Kompakt and Michael Mayer have become the darlings of UK clubland partly thanks to success of the monthly Stink parties at the T-Bar in London. The idea for Stink was cooked up by Mayer and Damian Lazarus (Crosstown Rebels) after a particularly debauched impromptu Ibiza afterparty in 2005. In honour of the spirit of the original, DJs vowed to skip shaving and washing on the weekend in solemn preparation for Monday nights in London, thus the name 'Stink'. Now the party is returning to its spiritual homeland in hot and humid Ibiza, this time as a residency at DC10. Can the filthiness remain all summer long?

While Mayer is no stranger to the shores of Ibiza, the idea of Kompakt having a residency alongside Def Mix, Yo****oshi and Subliminal will surprise many longtime Kompakt watchers. In the past the label has paid little heed to the more populist meccas of global clubbing such as Ibiza or Miami’s WMC.

So as Kompakt inches further towards the mainstream, what's a Wolfgang to think? Well, it’s not as if the man is unacquainted with superstardom. Mayer told RA that when Voigt met Tiesto backstage at a German music awards ceremony last year, Tiesto gushed. The Dutch trance maestro has all of Kompakt’s records and is a lovely chap, apparently.

The nine-week season of Stink parties in Ibiza will run every Friday night from July 14 to September 8. Residents Lazarus and Mayer will be joined by guests including
DJ Koze, Reinhard Voigt, Dinky, Chloe, Pier Bucci, Rob Mello, Jennifer Cardini, Kiki & Silversurfer, Jamie Jones, Scarlet Etienne, Superpitcher, Matias Aguayo, Tobias Thomas, Roman Flugel, James Holden, Matt Tolfrey, Gabriel Ananda, Dominik Eulberg, Tobias Becker, 3 Channels, Ivan Smagghe and Matthew Styles.

Before the Stink residency begins, Lazarus and Mayer will also play together at Circoloco at DC10 on June 19. A limited edition Stink CD mixed and compiled by the dirty duo
will also be given away to partygoers. Check RA's Ibiza 2006 Event Listings or the forthcoming Stink website for further announcements about the weekly line-ups.

Don’t expect to see Wolfgang Voigt on the island though. Rumour has it he has never set foot out of Germany.

Spotlight 3 Sentence Review

Really good. Damian Lazarus repaid the faith of fans with brainy-yet-thumping techno and an autograph or two. Busy enough.

Michael Mayer plays Stink @ Dc10 opening July 14, 2006

From a recent interview with Michael Mayer (above left):

http://allsexistape.blogspot.com/2006/11/taped-conversation-michael-mayer.html

MR SOFT: Stink in Ibiza was sadly shortlived. Any plans to try it again, at a different venue, next year?

Michael Mayer: No. I don’t think about starting anything new in Ibiza. The territories there are carved out. And hey… ever been on Mykonos? Ever had a summer party in Portugal? The world is full of terrific places to party. Ibiza is totally overrated. I had that notion long before Stink Ibiza died. Actually, I felt relieved when it was over.

he's right though, plenty places in the world to party, but the Stink PR machine was hardly in full swing.

U're right, it's sounds a bit weak to say that Ibiza is overrated because your party didn't work (or didn't get the chance to work). Of course you can party all over the world at beautiful places. Nothing wrong with that but there's a reason why Ibiza is Ibiza!!!
And the argument that all the territories are carved out is a bit lame too. Underground and DC10 (Circoloco) also got in a few years ago and have established themselves very well. There always is a way for new ideas and concepts. Ibiza is just a hard one to convince...

stoking the Stink feud

"Dc10 are children" says Michael Mayer of German label Kompakt. "I don’t like them that much."

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature_view.asp?ID=796

It’s in the nature of the music: Kompakt might have been the default sound of clubbing in Cologne, but for club cultures weaned on different traditions, perhaps its popness, artiness and peaklessness will always remain a minority taste. One such place is Ibiza, where Mayer tried to transplant Stink in the summer of 2006. Called Stink with the concept that the DJs wouldn’t wash before the gig, it wasn’t exactly the girls-in-champagne-glasses entertainment on offer elsewhere on the island. After three weeks, the party closed, citing insufficient numbers. Let’s talk about Ibiza, Michael. "Oh." Mayer grimaces. “I think we were a bit naïve. After the first night, DC-10 decided that they didn’t like the sound and that they were not going to promote the party, and that broke our neck. If you want success in Ibiza, you’ve got to play the game. I won’t play so I don’t think we even had a chance there.” A hint of bitterness creeps into Mayer’s voice. “DC-10 - they weren’t partners. I think they are children, you know? I don’t like them that much. They can do the Monday afterparty thing but I think when they reach out for the Friday night, they won’t have people come. I don’t know.” He throws up his hands. "There are just so many conspiracy theories about why it didn’t work. Clubs. Club culture!"

I'll ask Damian Lazarus tonight; he's playing Dclub in Lausanne.
Brilliant. Ask him to choose sides.

Mayer's comment "Dc10 can do the Monday afterparty thing but I think when they reach out for the Friday night, they won’t have people come" doesn't make sense given how successful Timo Maas's Wednesday nights were. Circo Loco co-promoted that too.

Re: "the sound", what I heard at the Stink opening party fitted well with the musical direction on Mondays and Wednesdays IMO.

I think it's Lazarus's fault. He should have been there every week.

I asked Damian Lazarus his reaction to the residentadvisor feature with Michael Mayer.
Apparently annoyed, Lazarus puts his phone in front of my face and I could read a sms from Mayer " I never said such things....." Couldn't read the rest of message.
I proposed Lazarus to post on this forum, he refused but said ok if posted.

It's a shame Stink never worked out as it could've been great. The lack of PR was definitely it's downfall. Even the big boys still need to plug their nights constantly and unless you did your research, you never had any idea who was playing on which night as they only had those generic billboard and A3 posters on the island.

Plus they should've had Lazarus and/or Mayer every week. Some week's line-ups were full of unknowns who whilst they may've been excellent weren't really a bit enough draw themselves.

Also, the week Stink was pulled, Lazarus still played Monza at Space, a night very similar in direction and pulled in a decent crowd whilst seeming to enjoy himself.

Good investigative work Moha!

I'd be interested to know what the Circo Loco guys think about all this. Has anybody seen Andrea Pelino or anybody else from the Loco crew?
