Still at War

Abel and Stella Matutes hit the headlines once again this week as they appeared
in court to answer claims of defamation of character against the current
Island Councillor for Transport, Albert Prats, in 2007.

Then a member of the ExC party, Prats was a fierce critic of the project to build
the dual-carriageway from San Antonio to Ibiza, as well as the extension
of the airport road.

During one of the many confrontations between Prats and the Matutes family,
the former Foreign Minister, Abel Matutes, claimed the ExC member
"was demonstrating his lunacy by jumping from one tree to another like a monkey
in Ca na Palleva". He continued that Prats was "someone who should have been
exhibited in a zoo, or at least a circus".
Abel, answering questions from the judge, refused to retract his statement.

Ca na Palleva was one of the focal points of the protest against the roads project,
as it was the site of a 150 year old finca which was eventually demolished
to make way for the airport road.

More seriously his daughter Stella, who was in charge of the project to build the roads,
had accused Prats of assaulting her during the San Jordi fiestas in 2006.
She again refused to deny the accusations.

Prats said he was not seeking compensation for the defamation,
but merely wanted a public apology from the pair.
He said the accusations had had significant consequences on his professional career,
reminding the court that at the time of the events he had been a school teacher.
He said many of his pupils had asked him if it was correct that he had assaulted
a woman, and that the civil servants in the Island Council had been worried
and afraid that he would, one day, become a councillor.

Outside the court, Prats said the monkey comments were unimportant,
but that he wanted his name cleared as far as the accusation of assault was concerned.

However, the following day he revealed that if the pair were eventually found guilty
he would be seeking damages of €18,000.
He said he would prefer an immediate public apology and to close the case,
but that if the defendants were unwilling to oblige, and were found guilty
of defamation of character, he would be seeking damages to ensure they received
some punishment for months of persecution.

Meanwhile Abel Matutes refused to talk to journalists about the case,
instead insisting it was time the Island Council began worrying about
the record unemployment in Ibiza, and the fact more and more small businesses
were going out of business every day, instead of concerning themselves
with settling old political scores.

His daughter made similar comments, whilst claiming she was extremely proud
of the roads, and that the public was slowly beginning to appreciate
the benefits of the project.

New Ferry

The new ferry "Abel Matutes", which is currently under construction in Vigo
in the north of Spain, will be registered in Malta.

According to the President of Balearia, the reasons are purely economic,
as far less taxes are applied by the countries which fly the flag of convenience.

When the Abel Matutes comes into service,
it will be the largest of the four new ferries
which have been commissioned by the shipping company.
