SPAIN and drink driving levels, my experience

Speed Control
The two speed radars on the Ibiza-San Antonio road were put into operation towards the end of last week. The moves are part of a national campaign which coincides with the start of the summer break (1st-3rd August) which will see just over six million vehicles take to the road. In addition 190 new speed radars will be set up across the country, taking the total to 765. Eighteen helicopters will also be made available to control the nation's roads.
The radars in Ibiza are at kilometre 7.957 and 9.635 and were installed last year, but have yet to be put into operation.
It was also announced during the week that traffic accidents within the capital during the first six months of the year had fallen by 24 per cent, down from 503 to 386. The Town Hall said they believed the fall was the result of successful campaigning, and a greater police presence.

What are the cameras for on the Santa Eulalia / San Rafael road - one is on the ama lur roundabout and another by the turn for the hippodrome - strange things.

Radars Active
The two speed radars on the island, which until now have remained inoperative, were officially put into action on Friday. Alarmingly, during their first ten days of testing a total of four cars were detected at speeds in excess of 180 kmph. The Central Government delegate to the Balearics, Ramon Socias, confirmed such speeds would now mean a custodial sentence after the introduction of new driving legislation in May, which will mean prison for those exceeding the limit by 80kmph.
The two radars are now in operation and Socias said he would have no leniency for drivers caught exceeding the speed limit.
The warnings came as Socias announced a crackdown on drink-driving over the Christmas period. He said that controls, both during the day and night, would be increased dramatically and it was everyone's responsibility to ensure that no-one got behind the wheel after having been drinking.

They have just started here a HUGE drink driving campaign here (got to try to make up lost revenue due to the 'crisis'). Yesterday i saw 2 drink driving controls, in the day and evening. The day one was at 3.30pm and they were stopping vans and breathalising workers after their siesta

In Spain is the same situacion... a drink driving campaign is on...
But this rainy days... Peter Pan's men are in their never never land...

Speed Radars
As the fines received as a consequence of the radar on the Ibiza-San Antonio road began being sent out, the Island Council confirmed that their petition to have the speed limit on the road increased to 100 kmph had been rejected by the Balearic Government. The proposal was sent for approval back in April 2008, but has been turned down by the Govern.
The fastest speed recorded by the radars since the two began to function on 12th December is 152 kmph. Although this case will probably go to court, the driver caught is likely to be fined €520 and have six points deducted from his license.
Although the limit is 80 kmph there is some leeway given and those caught driving below 90 kmph will not be fined. However, those in excess could be caught on camera and will be liable for fines of €100 (€70 if it is paid within 30 days).
