South Africa

thinking of going here on honeymoon, however after thumbing through many brochures, it's pretty mindblowing stuff, ie so many things to do, Ideally it would be 2 weeks, 3-4 days on safari in one of those lodge things then the rest a beach/sun hoilday, obviously looking at "sun city" but slightly put off by fact that it's inland so no beach. Has anyone been? Any reccomendations? Advice? :?

JJ - PM me as Karen and I did 4 days on safari and then a week in Cape Town in September as Barbie says.

Westayed at a place called Hout Bay, near cape town this time last year. It is a very beautiful counrty, stunning infact. The food there is the best I've ever had anywhere in the world, especially the seafood and fish.

If you do go you must visit this place http://www.spier.co.za/moyo.asp
It's about an hours drive into the countryside and is kind of like a none commercial Bambudda grove only it's obv a south african theme, with live music, dancing etc all under the stars.

The only negative things I'd say are you have to be aware the whole time because of the crime rate, and the night life wasn't my cuppa tea (I found it too much like London bars like Click, pangea etc)

I'll post up some pics from up table mountain if I can work out how too.
:?

Hey jj. I was there for a week in September and had a great time.

I think you'll probably want to spend more time in Cape Town. I did not get to go there but everyone told me it's great. You've got coastline, you've got wineries... I think there's even penguins somewhere around there  The city is supposed to be quite nice.

I stayed in Johannesburg and you can pretty much do everything there in 3-4 days. We took a tour of Soweto, visited 3 wildlife parks and went to Pretoria twice (nice town, by the way).

We stopped in at Sun City and it's a nice resort and all that, but I personally wouldn't stay there unless you're spending the night before/after a visit to the nearby Pilanseberg National Park. It's a set of hotels with casinos, wave swimming pool, golf courses, entertainment centers, a zoo, and the like, surrounded by very picturesque mountains. Might make for a romantic get-away but I think that kind of thing would be better somewhere on the coast.

You can drive around on "safari" at Pilanesberg. Very large, nice wildlife park... not quite the movie image of safari I had (in the back of a pick-up truch with guides wearing khaki and carrying shotguns ) but it was cool.

If you've got 27 minutes of free time, you can see the video from my trip here:

(apologies in advance that you can't fast forward through the boring 3-min introduction part )

Sandi, agree with you totally about the nightlife and that Moyo out in the Winelands - great evening and I have never seen a buffet like it 8O

Also really recommend the restaurant at the Cape Grace hotel in Cape Town. We had a superb meal and the Maitre d' joined us for a drink in the whisky bar after we had eaten. I only realised why when I checked the bill and saw Kang had left a 30% tip 8O 8O

One other thing: maybe because we were staying in Sandton, which is a ritzy part of Jo-burg on the edge of town, but I didn't notice the massive crime problem that everyone talks about. Of course, you should have your wits about you but in Jo'burg the introduction of cc cameras has reduced street crime in the city by something like 70%.

Nightlife in Jo'burg was a bit difficult to come by but we did find one decent club on the northern edge of town.

Wow, South Africa. Seems kind of dangerous to me. I heard it used to be a lot beter about 10-15 years ago.

Awesome video John. Thanks for sharing:D . Nothing like seeing a video with a shot of Leopards humping:lol: . Seriously, it was a great video. Once again, thanks for sharing.

Glad you guys enjoyed the film :D (note to jj: take a video camera ;))

The leopards humping was funny... almost had a good shot of the tigers at it too
