have to say though that NYC for me, especially new yorkers are a totally different species than what the rest-of-the-world may consider a typical US tourist. more european, more cosmopolitan, more open minded, great city

I was really really impresed with the NewYorkers, they are always ready to help tourists and they always are nice and gives you a bit of conversation. I confess that since then I'm more carefull with tourists and when I see someone in the middle of las ramblas trying to read the street finder I always ask them if I can help

Learning a few words when you visit a country is never gonna harm anyone is it? I find it gets me more in the holiday mood too.

Although one year I was asking for a bottle of vino Rosada instead of Rosado which translates into a bottle/glass of wolf fish.

In most cities where I've visited, I can pick out my countrymen mile away (tell tale signs: baseball cap, backpack, fanny pack, khaki shorts and plaid shirt).

I agree with Morbyd. It is not necessary for our countrymen to start talking for us to recognize them. Baseball cap, backpack, fanny pack, khaki shorts and plaid shirt, all true. But the one thing that he forgot to mention, one that sticks out like a sore thumb in Europe; guys with socks above their ankles .

I would still challenge anyone who can point me out as a tourist provided I keep my mouth shut and I am not wandering around as if I am in a new place. Even when I went to the island the first time, I did not run into that "dilemma". If anything at all, once I hit Europe, I can pass off as a Indian, Turk, N. African, Portuguese, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Iranian, etc. as long as I keep my mouth shut. Come to think of it, I should have aggressively pursued a career at the agency 8) .

By the way, speaking of languages, what happened to my homework assignment, Senora Mikkak???

But on that point, on the beach this summer I could find the handful of Europeans without them opening their mouths just by looking at their swim wear! 8)
