Snorkeling??

Ha. Thanks. Top of the hill it is then or else the car hire office staff will be off to Ama Lur for their dinner on my insurance. When you say its not far, if I tell that to a 7 & 5 year old will I be in trouble by the time we reach the bottom?!

10 mins walk...15 on the way back up. maybe don't do it on the hottest day. think you should be fine though.

A tip with star boats, as well as venturing to other bays - aim for a longer stay at Cala Salada.

Take lots of bread, too much is never enough.

Drop anchor there, jump in to the seas and get someone to keep throwing the bread in.

Hours upon hours of fun.

Played with my gopro whiling away my last afternoon at Cala Carbo on Tuesday. Snorkeling always sorts me out no matter how fragile a mood I'm in, and a few clouds don't matter when your underwater  ...

Where is currently good for snorkelling, avoiding crowds (for Monday 28th July)?

Post storm, Cala Salada / Saladeta were good on Friday but looking for somewhere else and not too inaccessible or crowded (as not on a weekend but still late July).

Very close from Salada you have playa de sa galera, cala codolar ( between conta and tarida )is not crowded either or cala carbo … they are many

Ahh. Good memories of doing exactly this. Thanks again for the tips.

It’s already been a long time since we can’t anchor at Cala Salada (to protect the posedonia which is almost everywhere there ) just go for a ride yes but no stop possible with the anchor, and regarding starboat and all the others company who rent boats without a license, from next year they will all be banned, and normally even currently it is not legal to go out further than San Antonio Bay with this kind of boats, I don’t mean that badly but there have been many many accidents with this kind of boat

So basically no more boating without license? Those boats aren't that different from boats requiring a license except that they have weak engines.

Is this change for Ibiza only, or for the whole Balearics? Never rented a (license free) boat in Ibiza, but did so in Mallorca once... in fact renting a boat in Ibiza is on my bucket list...

wait? WHAT?

no more easy boat rides from SA to cala bassa and back?

were people taking the piss on the boats or is there another reason?

Yes, they will ban them in 2026 in Ibiza, on the other Balearic islands I don't know. There are several reasons for this: the most obvious is that they don't require a license and therefore the tenants don't have basic navigation knowledge, legally they don't have the right to leave the bay of San Antonio, and we see them as far as Es Vedra sometimes, in general most go to Cala Conta which is a good example, there even in summer there is often a current, the anchor is badly set and the boat ends up either on a rock or on another boat which costs much more! An unlicensed boat costs between 6 and 8 k and obviously the insurance does not cover the damage caused to a sailboat or a yacht. Another problem is that all these boats are on pirate moorings in the bays of the island (which is strictly forbidden) and not in the port at a legal location. There are also many problems with the fact that there are large quantities of strong alcohol consumed on this type of boat.

Many thanks for this info Greg. I had no idea. I went with @fatphilb and some others on the Star Boat a few years ago, and it was such good fun. To everyone’s amusement, I swam to shore with my money in a carrier bag to get some drinks. Funny memories. It was my first taster of just how awful cala bassa can be so we didn’t stick around too long. I can understand them stopping it tbh if people were abusing the boating rules.

What about license free boats operating in other places than San An? Portinatx has boat rentals for example, I think. Where can you go from there?

And who in their right mind would rent a boat to stay within the bay of San Antonio? There is nothing to do and nothing to see there. We are talking about regular sized 4-6 person motor boats with 18hp engines, right?

Anyway, thanks for the heads up, will try renting a boat in September before it is too late. And it's time to finally get a boat license...

From Portinatx I don't know how far you can legally go with this type of boat, but there are some very pretty spots not far from the small esplanade where they are rented and there are much less problems, not the same type of clientele and far fewer boats at sea.

for the bay of san antonio, port des torrents and cala bassa are part of the bay, and between these 2 beaches, there are super cool spots with not many people, for boats without a license there are some that can take up to 8 people and the engine is generally 15 horses max (above 15 horses you need a license)

Well my personal choice would be to go north from San Antonio, not west, so it's quite a bummer. Who regulates where you can and cannot go? Is it just part of the rental contract, or does the government specify that you cannot go to certain places without a license?

Aren't there jetski tours from San Antonio to Es Vedra for people without licenses? These must be illegal too then?

If you don’t go further than cala salada, and you don’t drop the anchor at cala salada you won’t have any problem, the rental agents will give you a map and it says that you can go there( even if legally it is not allowed, the authorities close their eyes this year ) so in case the police are at sea, you show them the map and it’s fine!

Regarding the jet-ski , yes they go to Es Vedra, but you must follow a zodiac that guides you there
