smoking in pubs new law in UK

I'm all for a smoking ban. I've more or less given up now, although I do have the odd puff on someone's ciggy if I'm out clubbing, I never smoke a whole one anymore though. I think if smoking was totally banned from pubs/clubs it would probably cut all social smoking. Most social smokers couldnt be arsed to actually go outside to the cold and smoke! Only the hardcore few would.

Oh, and if they can do it in Ireland, one of the biggest drinking countries around, they can definately do it here!

Same here.

Daft thing is, i never crave one until i have a drink in my hand.

Yet, when i'm out in a 'no smoking' bar/restaurant i couldn't care less. In fact i leave feeling much better about myself.

I'm exactly the same. Looking forward to the ban coming in as I'm sure it'll make me stop for good. I'm sure the amount I smoke on a night out makes me feel 10 times worse the next day to:evil:

For once, the government has done something right

I think this is the first time in it's current term that our Labour government has made a change that is supported by the overwhelming majority of the country!

Well done Tone & friends!

As a smoker of many years, i welcome it.

Although i haven't had a sober ciggy for a while now (months) i still consider myself a smoker.

The thing that ****s me up everytime is the urge to drink and smoke1

This may be the extra help i neeed to ensure i stay off the tabs.

Good news, wish they could bring it in sooner. 8)

I'm all for being able to do what you want and feel sorry for those smokers who don't want to quit, but i'm more interested in not dying of cancer.

Agreed - I am sure i suffer a "fag" hangover after a session, I dont drink much when clubbing - usually a few before the club, maybe one in the club, but always have a drink or 2 on returning from the club.

I packed in for 6 months 2 years ago and my main problem was going out and not smoking, so when i went clubbing, I always took some lollipops out with me   , didnt look that cool, but it stopped me wanting to have a cig in my hand....... it worked very well for me....:?

(I only started smoking again in the June because I knew Ibiza was coming up and I was certain I would cave in and smoke over there (I only stopped because of the cost over here and its pennies in comparison smoking abroad).... so I decided to get back into training for Ibiza     (how stupid?)

Correct-a-mundo Drew...........I used to smoke 20 a day for years, I went cold turkey in 1992 and took up running to help. Since then I've been running for Derwentside Athletic Club, I've done 9 Great North Runs (2 of which were under an hour and a half 8O, best time 1hr 28m 45secs and was in the first 1500 out of 40,000 8O, the others were just over an hour and a half). I still hold the club record for the most races ran in a twelve month period. Was around 1997 and I ran 54 races from 1st Jan to 31st Dec. In 1998 I was part of a relay team that ran the Coast to Coast route (for charity), a distance of 140 miles, in under 18 hours. In 1999 I was also part of a team of 10 runners that did the Three Peaks in Derbyshire, a distance of 28 miles, in under 6 hours.

I still run nearly every day...........well OK, it's more jogging nowadays, but I'm still clocking up 30 miles a week (did 7 miles yesterday). Due to there being a heart condition in my family (and not helped by smoking), my doctor actually stated last summer that giving up smoking and taking up running has probably saved my life! 8O What more incentive does anyone need than that!

The anti-smoking lobby and the medical profession don't emphasise enough that it's never too late to give up smoking. Your body regenerates over a 5 year period, I'm living proof of that! :p ..........

.................and I don't want passive smoking of other peoples smoke to undo all the hard work I've done. If other people want to smoke that's fine, it doesn't bother me, I just don't want to breathe it in as well.

Apart from the health benefits and the savings from each pack of fags bought, the other MAJOR plus side to stopping is the huge savings you'll make on your life insurance, critical illness etc.

Takes a full year to declare yourself a non-smoker though, which is a good incentive to stop NOW!!!

As MarkB said, i wish the ban would come tomorrow.

I am so very happy about this ban :D I was a chain smoker until I stopped 2 and a half years ago (I remember Drew being gobsmacked about how many ciggies I smoked in Ibiza  ) and now I just hate it.

I know I'm "one of those reformed smokers" that irritate everyone but I just can't help it. Especially in clubs and on the dance floors, I've been burned on the arms more times than I care to remember

So, does this mean they will have to close down the smoking room in our offices?

I'm all for it it's about time and long overdue, oh and I read some of the posts if anyone thinks that it'll be ok to have a fly cig at the club they go to post ban I would imagine they would be ejected from the club same with pubs they will not risk their license to let people get away with smoking you can expect some to be made an example of.

According to the Sun (so it must be true) yes..... no more smoking rooms, this ban has also affected private members clubs too who originally thought they would be exempt from the ban.....

I understood that private members clubs are allowed to let their members decide via a vote whether or not they wish to impose a ban or not.

Also the ban will only apply to licensed premises that prepare freshly cooked food which means that approximately 40% of pubs will be exempt from the ban.

It's not all bad ;)

No doubt some will be made an example of, thats right.

I'm for it, but not sure how it will work. If clubs notice drops in numbers will they turn a blind eye to keep their business going? Like someone said already, they can't stop people taking e's or snorting charlie in the toilets - and that puts their licence at risk too.

The only places you will be able to smoke are:

Outside, in a private residence, in army barracks, in prison and in care homes.

No, thats wrong.

See above. All licensed premises are included, food serving or otherwise and even private members clubs.

Quality - so in order to carry on smoking its boiling down to leave home, join the army, get arrested and end up in an old peoples home...........

yes pretty much

it's fairly safe to say that if you go out and do a double murder then you'll be able to smoke whenever you feel like it

I believe that was the original criteria put forward by the Govt, however, on reading the papers today (... well I say papers..... The Mirror/The Sun) its everywhere - regardless of private membership or food serving so....... :?

Thats corerct. the original bill proposed by the government was to include exclusions for private members clubs and those not serving food. However, back benchers threatened a revolt and so the govenment allowed a free vote, which lead to the total ban being passed.

Don't feel sorry for me. Feel sorry for people who want to quit and can't. People like me who don't want to quit are well within our rights and with the propaganda pumped out by governments in this day & age, it's a pretty informed decision.

People say this, and I'm not disputing your experience, but everyone I've personally known whose died of cancer (examples that come to mind are my best friend's mom and my godfather) died many years after quitting smoking. On the other hand, I've seen smokers live to ripe old ages.

No matter what you do, life is random and you're not guaranteed any additional time on this planet no matter how clean you live. I'd rather go out doing things I enjoy doing, smoking among them.

*excuse me... waitress.. could you please bring me an ashtray and another pint of lager? Will my bacon double cheeseburger be ready soon?*
