SMOKING CIGGYS...

I have come to the realization that it may be time to quit soon. I keep denying all the negatives and feel like I should stop justifying and telling myself "someday, I'll do it." Anyone have any miraculous cures (or helpful hints) for quitting? Like, is cold turkey better or a gradual ease-off? Not like I chain smoke or anything (well, sometimes when I am "otherwise inhibited"), but it has become enough of a habit to where I get cranky if I can't have one.

Just been really thinking of how nast it is lately. I have been working out a lot, and while my body strength is progressing immensely, my cardio and breathing still labor of course. I can't get to the next level if I keep puffing away. Not only that, it is awful for you, it STINKS, it ages your skin, and it drains the pocketbook like no other.

However, as any smoker knows... a freshly lit schmiggy is utterly the MOST gorgeous compliment to a delicious stiff cocktail. It is so hard to not smoke! Sometimes when I am out partying and light up, I think to myself... "DAMN, this is nice!" Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be >AHEM< outside waiting while you all think about your responses

I think its all in the mind...you need to persuade yourself that smoking is bad. I would also say go cold turkey.
And stay well away from alcohol, thats the one which always trips me up though I'm pretty good now and haven't bought any for ages, just scrounge the odd spliff here and there...good luck!

I can only relate to my own experience, WARNING: it's not for everyone.

After smoking 20 a day I went cold turkey over 10 years ago and never touched one since. It takes a lot of commitment, determination and shear willpower. You've really got to want to quit, most people try to give up 'cos it's the right thing to do, family pressure, etc., but still enjoy smoking and not really committed.

I went out for a 5 mile run the 1st day and nearly killed myself  . I did this every day for a month as soon as I started craving a smoke. During which time my wee turned brownish like beer 8O , was all the toxins comming out. After that first month I have NEVER EVER craved a cigarette since. :D I got addicted to running instead and joined the local athletics club. I used to run 1,500 miles per year training and racing 8O . I still run for them, although nowadays it's more of a jog  . I have never submitted to temptation from other people, even for wacky baccy  . To this day I have a pal who works on the North Sea oil rigs and is always offering me cigars, I get annoyed with him 'cos I've been stopped for over 10 years!

It's all about committment, everybody can do it, you can too! ;) Go for it, in the future you'll be really glad you did. Put the money to one side and this will pay for a trip to Ibiza, yay!!! :D

Good on you Pachagirl!

My mate stopped about 2 months ago and hasn't looked back. He read 'Stopping Smoking the Easy Way' by Alan Carr, says it made stopping one of the easiest things he's ever done (have a look on Amazon, the testimonials are quite something). He also carried on his life as normal e.g. going to pubs and drinking etc., hasn't changed his life at all apart from probably extended it by giving up the evil weed, says he might as well gwet into the habit of not smoking in such situation while his will-power's strong.

Go for it, I think it could be the best present you'll ever give yourself.

My little habit is getting worse. For the past 7 years of so I have just had a smoke when I've been drinking, and could never even touch one sober.

However, I've found myself having some lately sober :? Think its because my girlfriend smokes more often than me, and its so nice to lie on the sofa or in bed having a crafty cig.

Don't even get me started on how good they are when your 8O 8O ;)

That is EXACTLY how I started!!! Just socially when I was at parties I would have one or two. Then one or two during the day sounds kinda nice. THEN next thing you know, you are buying packs for yourself.

I read Alan Carr at the beginning of the year and thought it was a bag of shite, he drove me mad with his constant preaching and I think I probably stopped smoking for about 4 hours  I think this year I am going to attempt with patches.

The Patch gave me massive dizzy spells and made me want to yack. It also didn't kill my cravings! I swear I think a lot of it is the oral fixation part of it

ok, I wont give my 2 penny worth cos I could go on forever, just want to wish you good luck for if you do decide to give up ;)

Sorry, for swaying from the topic, but Leese where do you get your smiley's from? I think they are very cool.

Thanx,
