Being a council employee i've to set a good example apparently.
Which means my normal spot outside my work is officially banned.

10 yards away I had to stand, and got absolutely drenched. not happy.

It's going to be very strange when the smoking ban hits the rest of the UK isn't it?

I know when the ban came into effect in Barcelona, they closed all the major clubs for refits to incorporate designated smoking areas. In the UK they won't even be allowed to do this because ALL smoking is banned.

:?

(I'm 100% for it but still think not being allowed to have a 4am ciggy is a bit wrong!)

I just can't imagine it happening, I mean if "silly" people can do drugs in clubs, surely they are not going to give a **** about the smoking ban.

Here is a laugh.
THe smokers area in clubs are very small and they are packed of smokers and smokers' friends. And at the end of the night you can see people smoking in the dance floors (non smoking). THere's also the bars thing. If they are smaller than 100m the owner could choose if smoker friendly or non smoker friendly. Around the 75% of bars are smoker friendly 8O
Smokers are work have disappeard 8)

ive not been out since it started. i've seen a few pubs with "terraces" and rumour has it the local cheese club are thinking of a roof terrace (the idea is laughable with ibiza in mind )

what annoys me is that the better smaller drinking holes, clubs, who can barely afford to stay open, dont have resources to implement "smoking areas". Its an out and out ban here. The bigger chain pubs will prevail but smaller more traditional pubs will lose out. Im all for sensible smoking practices but this is very widespread and, once the softly softly period wears off, it'll be £50 on the spot fine. Plus, I can't see 1 small team of enforcement officers dealing with an entire city filled with drunken guys on a saturday night. There'll be trouble from this. I'll bet tonnes of barpeople are seriously concerned with this ban.

What is this bann? Are bars and pubs obliged to have a smokers area or they can choose?

We thought it would be impossible in Spain and it's all very smooth ;)

total ban in all enclosed spaces, workplaces. ie. if you drive a company car, you cant smoke. if you use your car for work, you cant smoke in it as its your workplace.

We were going to have a partial ban Sil (ie places that didn't serve food could be exempt etc) but then they voted for a total ban so from next summer there is going to be total non-smoking in all public places - clubs, bars etc etc, if you want to smoke you're outside.

Its happened here.. no smoking in any restuarants, clubs, bars, pubs... and it is enforced... no smoking area.. you have to go outside.

I also work at the university here and they are thinking of banning smoking completely from the entire campus.. which means not outside ... or anywhere... and the uni campus is huge... so people will have to walk up to 1 km or more to have a smoke.

doesn't bother me as I'm not a smoker, but when its minus 30 in the winter , its a long walk to go.

nanny state. next they'll ban big macs and anything else "bad for you"

big macs don't harm the person next to you though (unless you find some kind of way of assaulting someone with one !!!).

Amen for the smoking ban - finally I can come back from the pub without smelling like an ashtray.

not happy...

stamps feet.

Now you know how the non-smokers have felt for all these years!

I have the occassional cigarette but even I think it's a disgusting activity and have greeted the ban with open arms. It was so nice going into pubs yesterday and not smelling smoke. It actually meant that I wanted to stay there longer rather than downing my drink and heading.

It will be hard for the clubs but most will allow people to go out for one. Most people I know are quitting due to the ban which can only be a good thing.

From what I've seen, people have gotten used to it really fast. I even know of a few people who were just "social' smokers who don't bother now because in the winter, no one wants to stand outside huffing away in sub zero temps.

I love leaving a club and not reeking of smoke!
