advice please...

how does one persuade one's best mate that he needs to radically upgrade his wardrobe ahead of our forthcoming visit to Ibiza in september (his first time there)?

without seeming critical or offending him.

and taking into account that (a) he doesn't have a huge amount of extra money to spend, and (b) he's american and your average heterosexual american male has little in the way of fashion sense.

any suggestions?

thanks.

Just take him to a club in your hometown- he will pick up ion the fact that no girls are checking him out fast enough- Money isn't the issue here... for about $100 you can get a decent pair of jeans (GAP/Levi's - $30), some snug t-shirts (pack of 3 v-neck or crew calvin klein, 2xist, etc. less than $25) and some nice sneakers (black adidas superstars can be worn with jeans, shorts, or a suit), one nice shirt (again, a simple black collared polo can be had for under $20) - this wardrobe + the proper attitude can get you into any club in NYC- I imagine Ibiza is even more relaxed....

i have terrible style so he'll be fine!

coming out to san fran in november hombre. brother's living in menlo park, near palo alto.

not gonna do any clubbing though, reckon im just gonna spend time with my bro, his wife and the wee nipper. apparently it pisses down all november anyway.

check the schedules for Ruby Skye - my sister lives in san fran, i caught carl kennedy there...cool vibe. behrouz is from san fran and spins there often.

ruby skye looks a bit hit and miss - wouldnt mind catching a spundae party

to be honest, originally i had big plans for clubbing etc. but i reckon by that time i'll be missing my brother (best friend) so much as well as obviously his family im gonna lock myself in their house for 2 weeks just being normal.

thanks for the tip though, theres a big **** off thread i should search for your sister may be interested in :) (thanks to axon)

A guy in tight wranglers that manages to outline his dong might prove to be a hit in Ibiza; you never know.

Good advice all round I think!

First (and easiest) step definitely is the sunglasses.

Laguna - ha ha that would be a fascinating prospect. Sometimes the least expected styles make a surprising come-back. Mullets anyone?

Phil - understandable. but if you change your mind, have time for some dancing, and need some tour guides, just gimme a shout. By the way, last night (Wednesday) I saw James Lavelle play in a really small bar in SF (ANU). Great night out and the cover was only $5!! Less than my pint of Hoegaarden! 8)

James Lavelle and Hoegaarden??

Hmm, now that might change my mind!

I'll give you a shout nearer the time. You could update me once I know what dates etc. see if theres anything that might tear me away from singing silly singing kettle type songs to the wean. Again, looking like November, so I'll bring my pacamac. Should get plenty sun in Ibiza in September anyway 8)

he could get a job as a bank manager here wearing that outfit!

Just let you're friend be himself and dress how he wants to. If you try and dress him in clothes he's not used to he'll feel uncomfatable.
If he dresses that bad people may think it's a new geek chic and copy   you never know. ;)

i agree with sandi, i mean you could maybe drop a few hints, more as advice rather than letting him feel you are trying to dress him. he's probably worrying himself sick about what he's gonna wear as well (judging from the amount of posts that are made here pre-holiday, i made one too)

sandi - i think you're right. i know the most important things are the music and the good company, and i'd hate to give him the wrong impression about what its all about. in any case its not as if i'm some kind of fashion guru.

phil - yeah i'm a lot less gloomy about the 'scene' over here than i was 10 months or so ago when i made that last post about san francisco. not only do we get top international acts dropping in and playing for next to nothing, but there are so many great house and breaks djs local to this area and a lot of really cool nights to go to. that said, i'm still coming over to ibiza in september to get my fix of european style clubbing :) . regarding november, its definitely the start of monsoon season. i'm from glasgow so i know what rain is, but i'd bring a full waterproof suit rather than a pac a mac!

I was going to say that some very good sunglasses are a priority.

then work downward.

would like to know. as my wardrobe is so 2002.

I picked up a pair of crap-tastic gaudy sunglasses at the La Sirena store in Playa den Bossa for 4€. I love 'em! :D

I too have a friend a little bit like this. He looks like a 32 year old skateboarder. Anyway I just took him into H&M and pointed out various things that I thought would do the trick for Ibiza. He got a load of good stuff for about £150.
