My brother's probably gonna be movin out there about March to work as a mad scientist. Just wondering what the club scene is like over there as Im probably gonna be spending 2 weeks out there instead of the opening parties in Ibiza next summer (aww shucks lol).

What can I expect??

First of all, don't compare any club atmosphere w/ Ibiza!!! You are just setting yourself up for disappointment.

There are some nice house DJ's out there, though. People off the top of my head who spin there a lot....Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, and the like. It's a more organic sounding house music, but some pretty mellow tunes. As far as the clubs, I have only been to a couple, but there are a lot of beautiful people out there from a lot of diverse cultures and walks of life. There are some pretty eccentric people out there, and you should have an unbelievable time.

One of my good friends just moved to SF, and I put this together for her... The scene (in relation to the rest of the US) is pretty damn good.

The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.

Really??! I already knew SF is much more humid than LA and much cooler, but I didn't even imagine it so cold.

I have been there for a week in December, January, June and August. It is cold and foggy all year long. Perhaps it's been my bad luck, but my 2 cents is that the term "Sunny CA" is only applicable to Southern CA.

I was lucky enough to go during a heatwave (apparently unusual in Sept.) back in '97, unluckily for me I left all my summer clothes in San Diego and only took autumnal clothing to SF - positive side - got a whole new wardrobe whilst up there!!

Loved that city - would defnitely go back again - btw - my friend works as a mad neuroscientist in SF - what company is your brother going to work for? Might well be the same.....

Sorry I missed the replies folks, completely forgot about my own thread!

He's going into Academia, provided he can secure a Grant (altho he's been offered a job anyway regardless).

I wasn't so much comparing it to Ibiza, just that I had to cut back my holiday plans. See, I just became an Uncle on Sunday and if he goes the bambino goes too, so I wouldn't try comparing Ibiza to being able to watch my newest bestest buddy growing up (even if it is only for a week or so)!

Thanks for all the information. Im definately planning on going out a few nights and checking the scene out, after all whats the point in going all that way and not doing it!

Hey fatphilb,

Lots of coincidences here.... I'm Scottish, a mad scientist (must be lots of us around) and I live in San Fran. I've been here for 7 months now.

The earlier replies to your post were pretty good and extensive. Sadly
Bripmon is correct in saying that you can't compare the vibe and atmosphere over here to anywhere in Ibiza, UK, Europe. San Francisco is probably one of the better places in the states to hear decent DJs spin, but in my experience nights are generally let down by a bad crowd. Proper clubbing is much more a minority pursuit over here than in the free world. Also people on the whole (a generalisation I know) are much less educated/passionate about the music and often just there to be seen
or to pull rather than for a specific DJ. This, together with the fact that Americans are extremely risk-averse and virtually noone takes any 'supplements' means for example that I have been to see DJs of the stature of Carl Cox and Nick Warren and found myself on a quarter-full dancefloor by around 2am! Embarassing isn't the word!

Despite all this however, you'll have a great time on holiday over here as it's always fun to explore a new city and SF is very quirky

The list of nights others have mentioned is good. I would say you could
also check out Club Mighty (119 Utah St). They have a decent house night called Salted on Saturdays with Miguel Migs as resident (I guess along with Mark Farina he's about the most internationally famous SF DJ). If you're into your breaks, you should also check out their Mighty Breaks night every 3rd Friday. This is a smaller club with quite a good vibe and more for people that are into the music.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you'd like more information. You'd be more than welcome to join myself and my clubbing mates whichever weekend you're over.

Sounds good mate :) He's just submitted his grant proposal so fingers crossed it gets the go-ahead. To be honest I don't want him to go, but its a great opportunity and to be honest if I had the chance to escape Dundee for sunnier more exotic climates I would! Will look you up when I'm over there cause Im not sure my bro is gonna be up for some late night clubbing antics. If you use msn my address is fatphilb@hotmail.com .

Hello There...

My favorite DJ Behrouz is a resident at Ruby Skye and is a well known SF DJ. He has a monthly party there you should check out called Pure Behrouz. Check his calendar for dates: www.djbehrouz.com or rubyskye.com.

Ruby Skye tends to have the best dj line up. Salted is all about deep house music and is not to my taste. Mezzanine tends to have good parties once in a while.

Downloading some Behrouz mixes just now :)

This Ruby Skye place looks quite cool. Suppose it all depends on when Im goin over but I will definately be taking in a couple of clubs and maybe a few gigs while Im in town :D

(as I mentioned before, its not an alternative to Ibiza, but theres no way Im missing out on my wee nephew growing up :D)

yo! dug up old thread alert...

anymore suggestions people? 2nd hand record shops, 2nd hand clothes shops, places to get smert trainers? things to do?

if i go out probably looking for something a bit more underground than ruby skye, not sure that place would really be my bag at all. somewhere it doesnt matter what you are dressed like etc. but still good music. must be places in san francisco like that even if the crowd are slightly different to a european crowd. im keen to find some hidden gems!

Im leavin on Friday 8) Get into San Fran at 7:30pm if all goes to plan

Decided against doing any clubbing (well, see when I get there) but not planning anything...

gonna be a bit tricky, unless i attach said flower to pubes

might look a bit dodge if customs get over eager :|

"Excuse me sir, but can you please explain why you have a Lilium michiganense down with your Johnson?"
