San An Change
The minister for Tourism at the Govern Balear, Francesc Buils, spoke of his plans to renovate San Antonio, after visiting the municipality last week and speaking to the mayor Jose Sala. Buils, on a three-day trip to the island, said it was important to know the needs of the different municipalities before offering solutions and economic help. He said that it was clear San Antonio needed a change of image. He declared himself happy with the work currently being undertaken, and admitted more money would be needed to ensure the area shook off its party image. He claimed that the municipality had much to offer besides the night time partying for which it is better known, and claimed economic help would be forthcoming, so that future promotion of the "other side" of San Antonio could be carried out.
Jose Sala, for his part, thanked the minister for visiting the municipality and said he agreed with his views. He claimed his administration had been carrying out a similar policy for the last few years but had lacked the cash to carry it through.

It's definitely improving, but I'm not sure where they're expecting people to party if they want to change the place?

Ah, that's right, off the island ;)

Well said. The authorities have to remember Ibiza has always had a reputation as a party island, particularly San An. If the West End disappaered the whole of San An's local economy would collapse. Ok so it might not be the nicest place on the island but it serves a certain market. As long as things are kept under control where is the problem?
The West End is a much better place than in the 1980's. It was absolutley packed, you couldn't even walk down some streets lots of cheap booze and fighting. I think the term 'larger lout' was invented to describe the 80's clientel.

i've just checked with my wife on this and she agrees with me. the 80's in the west end was a real fun time, lots of people, crowded streets, a fun atmosphere and no trouble. there was more variety then, there were still little restaurants and little houses where people lived and would sit outside to watch people having fun. there was of course lots of cheap drink which seemed quite advantageous at the time!

don't get worked up about this one grego. the opposition's job is to moan about everything the government does or has not done.

Mouaaahahhahaahahahahaha 300 000 euros :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: ... the only place in the world ,the silence city ... héhéhé

how many promenade they could make with all that money :?::?::?::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

300,000e? That's going to smart a bit. I wonder who they're going to be making an example of at the start of the 2008 season?

Obscene Parade
The Town Hall of San Antonio revealed that they have sent photographs and an official complaint to the public prosecutor concerning a procession carried out by the club night, "Home Club", celebrated in Privilege. The procession, which is a common publicity ploy by the more popular club nights on the island, consisted of four semi-naked women, crawling along the floor on all fours, chained together, covered in mud, being led along by a man. The councillor, Jose Ramon Serra Pilot, said that the exhibition was degrading to women, and certainly not what the municipal wanted parading through the town at eight o'clock in the evening. He continued that the organisers had been granted permission for the parade, but that the contents had not been revealed to the Town Hall. He warned that he would use every means possible to ensure that those responsible for the show were punished. However, he admitted that he did not hold the club responsible, saying that it was the responsibility of the promoters of that particular night. For their part the organisers of the parade, the theatrical group la Fura dels Baus, said that the piece was in no way meant to be offensive, and it certainly did not degrade women. They claimed that the show merely consisted of actors playing out certain roles, and that they had performed a similar theme in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992.

 sant antoni will have a noise map with protected zones
"pilot explained that they want to keep as areas with zero noise places like sant mateu, sant rafel or corona while others will be more permissive, like the west end"
from the ibiza sun:

New Map
San Antonio is to have a "sound map" in its attempt to try and regulate noise levels within the municipality. Although the plan is still very much in the development stages, the Councillor for the Interior, Jose Ramon Serra Pilot, revealed that areas such as San Rafael and San Mateu, would have a zero tolerance policy, whereas the West End, for example, would be far more controlled. He claimed noise levels within the West End were already excessive, and the plan would introduce stricter controls with fines reaching €300,000 and closures of up to one year for extremely serious offences. The project was announced several weeks ago and various associations were asked for their input. So far just three have put forward proposals, including the bar association in the area. Pilot claimed the plans would be finished in about one month, and would then be put on public display. There would then be a designated time set in which people could make their suggestions or complaints about the project.

talking about alternative tourist models..... from the ibiza sun again:

Golf Course Gets Go-Ahead

The Town Hall of San Antonio has given the go-ahead to the property developers, Andria Inversiones Inmobiliarias SA, to start initial applications for the building of a golf course in Benimussa. The rubber stamp comes on the back of remarks made by the mayor, Jose Sala, in his election speech that he would like to see more golf courses and the higher quality of tourist that this type of project would bring. The proposed site for the course will be in the area surrounding Ses Paises, Can Tomas and Benimussa. However, Sala confirmed that it will not include the Puig den Llucs zone, an area protected against the building of golf courses. When asked about the potential size, he confirmed that nothing had yet been decided, but that it would have to be at least the minimum permitted for a golf course which currently stands at 600,000 square metres.

The company, Andria Inversiones Inmobiliarias SA, confirmed that they had so far verbally secured almost 500,000 square metres of land and were in talks with other land owners. The company also revealed that the plans include the building of a 5-star hotel, with a capacity for 450 people, which would be open all year round. The cost of the golf course will be between 100-150 million euros and, if everything goes smoothly, could be a reality within three years. The company is owned by the controversial American businessman Marc Rich (which he most certainly is). The 73-year-old businessman has spent 18 years of his life fleeing from the American justice system, after he was accused in the early 1980´s of the biggest tax evasion in history. He was also accused of ignoring the Iranian oil embargo of the same period. Between 1983 and 2001 he was among the FBI`s 10 most wanted list, with a reward for his capture of 750,000 dollars offered at the time. His problems came to an end in 2001 when Bill Clinton, in one of his final acts as president, controversially granted Rich an official pardon. The businessman has had Spanish nationality since 1982, and is considered one of the biggest oil transporters in the world. He owns over 50 companies all over the world. Rich owns a house on the island where he spends his summers.

Golf Delay

The company interested in building a golf course within San Antonio announced
on Monday they would not, for the moment, be going ahead with the project.

The representative of Andria Inversiones Inmobiliaria, Carlos Greght, confirmed that after a meeting with the new environment minister at the Consell Insular, Albert Prats, the project had been put on hold. He said the minister had made it clear permission would not be granted for the project, but had not given his reasons for such an opinion. Greght said he was dismayed at the short-sightedness of the decision, and claimed he had been expecting to receive the green light to begin initial plans.

The project would have meant an investment of over €100m in the 18-hole golf course, which would have included a five-star hotel, open all year round. Greght revealed the complex would have given work to around 300 people and would have signified a measure of investment in the island as a whole. He added that it would have been a good opportunity to attract a tourist with a much higher disposable income than normal, and would have benefited a great deal of businesses.

The project had originally been planned for Benimussa, and Greght confirmed pre-contracts had already been drawn up with several land owners in the area giving the company 500,000 m2 of the 600,000 m2 minimum needed to build a course in Europe.

The Consell released a statement the following day claiming anyone who wished to apply for permission for a golf course was free to do so. However, they hinted they did not consider such a project to be to the benefit of the island.

The Hotel Federation also entered the debate, with the president pleading with the Consell to reconsider its position on the subject. Roberto Hortensius claimed the association's relationship with the new PSOE-run Consell was a good one and the previous problems, encountered with other socialist run Consell was a thing of the past. However, he did ask the administration to contemplate allowing a new golf course to be built, and said it would be extremely beneficial for the island. Hortensius claimed his association would never support a course built in a green area, like Cala d´Hort, but said they were in favour of the construction of a course in mature tourist destinations, such as San Antonio and Playa den Bossa.

It will be interesting to see if the Consell has a change of heart over the next four years,
as support grows from all corners for a new course to be built on the island.

Very interesting. (and hooray!).

I don't doubt it'll bring in money and create jobs, but how on earth can they build one with the current water shortages on the island? It's lunacy.

most of the water used on the courses would be recycled - abel matutes had something to say on this subject pre-election

Matutes talks Golf in Ibiza
Businessman and ex-minister Abel Matutes emerged from his Ibiza bunker to talk golf to the massed ranks of the press the other day. Coincidentally there is also an election looming which will decide if his daughter Stella – largely responsible for the massive road projects on the island – stays on in government.
There's been a lot of mud thrown in the Matutes' family's direction recently, not least about €1.8 million worth of it which has allegedly found its way from land compulsorily purchased from home and farm owners to the very spot where the new golf course will be situated.
The perfectly reasonable explanation for this massive amount of land shift is that Matutes gave permission to the main contractor of the roadworks to dump it there so it wouldn't cause a nuisance to traffic in summer.
On the subject of golf he stated that a new golf course near Playa den Bossa would only use half the amount of water (recycled from his hotels) as the same area of alfalfa, but would realise 7 times more profit. He added that the thousands of trees and shrubs that will be planted would make an ideal habitat for local fauna. Presumably he meant Albert Prats, a political opponent of the motorways, who Matutes (ex foreign minister and head of the diplomatic corps) referred to as a monkey who should be in a zoo!
