Salt Addiction - anyone hooked?

Been trying to cut down on salt for years, always failing miserably.

The past few days I realised just how much salt I was having on my food, the salt mill was not working properly, instead of dispensing large chunks of salt, it had to be adjusted to dispense much finer salt. To even get a hit I had to virtually cover my food with the finer salt, my plate looks like a snow scene:cry:

My bp has always been perfect, so no damage done yet, might not continue to be so fortunate as the years tick by. Just read this and am slightly concerned;

Can stop beer/ wine/ sugar/ anything else, even managed to kick the crisps for short periods, but the salt is a real bugger to kick.

Has anyone had a salt addiction problem and managed to kick it for good? How long after stopping the salt did food start and taste of anything remotely edible?

Is it possible to use a little less each time? If it's as bad as you say it is, maybe weigh what you're putting on your food and cut back each week?

i hate salty food.

I only use it when cooking, and never pile it on food afterwards like im gritting the M1.

Too much salt is usually a sign of bland food crap quality food.

Herbs and spices + meat from a proper butchers + veg from a local farmer = much better flavour.

Doesn't the constant dehydrated dry mouth bother you?

I have been off salt for years, will use it to cook with. I had different herb and spices to bring out flavor. I am addicted to garlic, just love it.

For me giving up tabs was easier than giving up salt - totally addicted to it - tried low salt and after a while I kind of got used to it - now I try to avoid adding salt wherever I can...

I dont eat a lot of processed foods anyway - i cook from scratch now because of this issue ...

Keep up the good work - it will definately benefit you in the long term...

We are virtually a meat free house, fish most nights, with the odd bit of chicken breast (nice free range).

I use loads of chillies already with my lunches (beans/ vegetables/ eggs). Need to try the herbs / light spices route.

Can't imagine eating potatoes, rice, pasta etc without salt :( Time to man up on this.

re: dry mouth, I drink many pints of water through the day, limit myself to one (max two) coffee's per day, and flavored tea.

The making a note/ weighing of how much has gone from the grinder each week would be frightening.

Cold turkey might be the way to go, use some herbs instead, the above article has got me worried!

My doctor advised me to eat salt on every meal for health reasons. I find this just as hard to deal with.

I was brought up on home made meals from a baby, my mum never used salt cooking because the babys ate the same food but blended. Don't understand how anyone can eat salty food!

Go cold turkey. You'll soon get used to it!

Is this a northern thing?

one of the girls at Sarahs work is from up your way... and she has a big tub of Saxa Salt by her desk.

i never use more than 3 turns on the grinder.

so many nice 'erbs out there!

Coriander + Monkfish (or Chicken) Green Curry.
Basil/Dried Oregano/Paprika + tomatos
Rosemary + Potato Rosti/Roasted

Making me hungry now.

I loves me salt :)

Normal BP so I'm not bothered at all.

Although I rarely use normal salt. I use Morton's, Lawry's or Cavender's in most dishes. And powdered bullion sometimes for a bit of extra flavor. 8)

I hate salt on food, drives me nuts when food is too salty. But I also hate added sugar etc.

Would only have it on fish and chips with lots of vinegar.

I can feel it when I've had too much salt, it makes me really ropey.

Chewie is right, love the taste of your food and salt becomes unneeded - however I still can't have more than two glasses of beer and I need a ciggie - even though it's 3 years since I quit- so no lectures on daft addictions from me!

Could you to using olive oil instead, as a dressing for pasta etc.?

I'm a hopeless loser, couldn't face my chilli prawns and rice tonight without salt and decided to start my cessation tomorrow:spank:

For pasta I use fresh tomato diced, garlic, onion, basel, pepper (red and black), a little red wine sauteed in olive oil

I been known to like eating OXO cubes which are quite salty, so possibly i am.

I used to make an OXO drink every day - that's how bad I was AND I would add it to McD's chips too - Phil used to say when you lifted my plate off the table it looked like a snow storm had hit the table lol

I am soooo good now when it comes to Salt but it took me a good while - total addiction - :(

Giving up smoking helped me see the way and taste my food properly.

(@MarkB - I feel your pain - 2 pints and I will nick a tab off someone :spank: but generally I go weeks without one.. 8)
