The truth is, I reckon it would become a day of purpose for all of the extreme nationalist and facist / racist groups if it were a National holiday.
You sound just like all those mad politicians and local government officials who claim we can't celebrate St. Georges Day, but we can celebrate St. Patrick's or local council offices not able to display Santa Claus in case it offends Muslims (The Muslim Council of Great Britain actually campaigned harder for US to celebrate Christmas than the Government did last year).
It's pathetic. I celebrated St. Patrick's Day by sitting in the pub, and given the opportunity I'd do the same for St. Georges Day. It's not like anyone's asking for special priveleges, just a bit of even-handedness.
Those people who seek not to offend the minority are as guilty of racism as the BNP or the radical Muslim preachers that tell their followers to go out and blow people up.

Ahem, excuse me, cough, cough,..,

What a silly reaction. Calm down Paddy, ease your glow, or something.

Right wing fanatics will of course try to jump on any St George's day bandwagon for their small minded ends. They've jumped on lesser points in the past to further their cause. There'll be a BNP commotion in my local shopping centre on St George's Day tommorrow as there was last year. Are you saying they won't????

I at no point did I say that it's a reason not to do it, DID I???

No I didn't. So calm down.

The reason I oppose St George's Day as with most people it's simply an excuse to for an extra day off and suddenly it's an affront to their national birth right that we don't.

*beep* Hell stop being a baby.

Anyway Ant and Dec day, any takers?
Whoah! Take a chill pill yerself mate. I was just pointing out that to not do something because it 'might' offend, or because unsavoury elements 'might' jump on the bandwagon is typical of the well-meaning, but misguided ethos that seems to prevail in this country at the moment. Personally I couldn't give a rats arse if the BNP try to hijack it- the best example we could set is to celebrate the day properly (by sitting in the pub  ) in spite of those who seek to intimidate or otherwise capitalise on what is supposed to be our national day regardless of creed, colour, race or whatever. I say bollocks to the lot of 'em, I just want a bloody beer!
Oh, and Ant & Dec Day? I guess it has possibilities, but I reckon Peter Kay Day would be better :D

Other side of the coin, why are people bothered about celebrating a saint when a lot of people on here apparently hate the pope and opposes the Catholic Church? Surely there is a little bit of conflict there??

Luckily my views are consistent - I don't hate the Pope but I believe some of his views are bigotted. This, I believe, is a bad thing because, for reasons incomprehensible to me, 1 billion people subscribe to the faith he leads despite all logic suggesting it's core belief is highly unlikely. Presumably these folks will follow his anti-gay stance etc.

I am also opposed to Bank Holidays and would have less not more, if it was down to me.

That, m'learned friend, is all.

I agree with everything you say.

However, I know that a lot of roman catholics regard the Vatican and the Pope as being as irrelevant and out of touch with the real world as you or I. And certainly don't subscribe to the anti-gay or anti contraception stance any more than the next man.

it's a disgrace!

pubs get extended licence in England for Paddys day but they are rejected for St. Georges day, no public holiday and people being made to take flags down by the council

But did you see eastenders the other night? They're going to celebrate st Georges Day!!!

Now if it's ok to celebreate it on prime time tv then it's gotta be deemed politically ok to celebrate it in real life is it not??

Sad state of affairs that it takes a soap opera to push things forward but at least its progress :D
