round the world clubbing (the best & worst)

Went back when I took the missus to NYC in '98 and was utterly frightened. It was such a freak show that we (plus my brother) were waved to the front of the line upon entry. I assumed it was because we didn't fit the mold of "New Jersey in the houuuuuuuse!" (as I remember an utterly annoying MC shouting out to rapturous cheers from the crowd). :?

In the vernacular, they're known as the "bridge and tunnel crowd". A subdivision of that are the "meatheads, guidos, and hoochies".

The "bridge and tunnel"crowd seem to have been around forever,my first experience of them was in the early 80s,in the Mudd club, everything cool and easy, then change of DJ and a surge of people, complete change of atmosphere..8O

Recently found out about the guido cult on here, never heard of the other subdivisions though ??

I can only say Melbourne clubs because I've never travelled. But this thread is great because I'm trying to plan a party trip for later this year.

In Melbourne, (Depending what music and atmosphere your after), the best all around club I think is Billboards. It has really nice Vj antics, a good Dj boothe on stage and so, although it's not VERY big (Not tiny, but it couldn't hold 20,000 people kind of scenario), but it's like a little concert everytime you go. So theres a concert atmosphere but also the comfort of a cozy bar and side rooms and everything. I love it. AND, it can be used for ANY music.

For, deep, slushy, underground nights. Mercatcross WAS the best. In the basement there, but I don't know what they've done to it now. Then, Bunker Lounge was great as like, the new dirty underground scene, as in, it was well hidden, but right under everyones nose. It had grafiti and everything and was just really nice, so we started throwing nights there.
We had our last one last Friday, and it was really good, theres video available on facebook and everything. I think youtube as well. Thats why I chose to work there because I could see exactly what it was perfect for. But now that might close also and we are with out a home.

Alot of the big festivals and rave kind events here are held at Telstra Dome, which isn't really a club it's a sporting venue, but the most popular parties with thousands of people and lots of international DJ's are held there, but they're not things I'd go to.

Best venue in Scotland, amazing atmosphere!

The Subbie for me - best lineups, week after week - would kill to have that place in London

wasn't that keen on the Arches - the security were arsey, the ceilings were too high, too easy to lose people, sound wasn't all that

I also preferred the Reading Rooms in Dundee - lovely little club they've got there, [freaky tourists not withstanding ]

Meatheads pride themselves on what they believe is their greatest accomplishment: they're biceps are bigger and better developed than their brains. Hoochie is a derivative of 'hoochie mama'.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/ offers the following definitions:

meathead
An enormously muscular guy who cannot hold a conversation about anything other than weight-lifting and protein shakes. Gets upset very quickly when he cannot complete his own sentences and thoughts. Can be found at nightclubs wearing shirts that are 10 sizes too small (if at all). Meatheads also tend to abbreviate where they live by putting the first letter of the city, and adding *town after. In addition to lacking high IQs, meatheads tend to stereotype things and people completely wrong.

hoochie
A female who appears to match a set of characteristics including: trashy, often inappropriately tight dress (with or without pudge overflowing waistband); eyebrows shaved and penciled back on in dramatic fashion; heavy, mostly monotonic makeup with dark lipstick; large, gaudy, costume-grade jewlery. Frequently accompanied by multiple children from different fathers (see baby-daddy). A woman usually defined as being a promiscuous or other wise a slut. To be a true hoochie, a woman must be labled by a collection of other jealous females.

Thank's for the clarification, seem's like meatheads and hoochies are the same all over the world, just wondered if the "bridge and tunnel" varieties had any special differences.

As the latter part of the night was disrupted by pushing, shouting, and general unloveable behaviour we took revenge, drove down through NJ to Asbury Park, got there at sunrise, slept on their beach, drank their beer, ate their food, parked across their driveways, they were dismayed !!
