Subliminal Sessions: Ovum Party (23-07-03) at Pacha

The Wednesday at Pacha, hosted by Erick Morillo, is probably one of the most popular clubbing nights at the Island. This night (23-7) Erick Morillo, had invited the Ovum Boys. Dutch DJ Benny Rodrigues accompanied Josh Wink for a week, but Benny didn’t DJ. Producer/DJ Pete Moss took the difficult job to warm up the place; it was a good start with some funky (deep) house. When Josh Wink entered the decks, Pacha was full… Josh Wink did what he does best: play a combination of (freaky) house, techno and some all-time house classics with his labtop/mp3-player. Although it took some time, Wink showed that he can build-up the atmosphere without letting go the underground sound. Meanwhile Laurent Garnier (as a guest, not a DJ) was clearly enjoying himself. Erick Morillo was going to DJ the last hours: when he started it was almost impossible to dance: Pacha was packed! It’s unbelievable how popular this man is. Morillo made everyone go crazy with his three Pioneer CDJ’s. Great vibe!

We love… Sundays at Space (27-07-03)

One of the ‘have to do things on Ibiza’ is going to Space on Sunday. It’s just unbelievable to see every Sunday’s line-up. This Sunday Alex Neri, Smokin’ Jo and Steve Lawler were headlining the terrace, while Robbier Butler, James Zabiela and Deep Dish were playing inside. The terrace used to be our favourite spot, but this Sunday the music couldn’t get a real grip on us. Unfortunately we missed Steve Lawyer, who is an exclusive resident for Space (together with James Zabiela). We went home for a quick meal and a short rest.

At 2.00 AM we went back to Space. At that time the terrace is closed (becomes a chill area). James Zabiela was doing a great set inside with some dark techno, electro and breakbeats using (again) Pioneer CDJ’s and turntables with scratching and full effects… amazing! The 23-year-old youngster, who firstly came to Ibiza for a warm-up set for Sasha in Space, ended with an electro/breakbeat version of the Age of love and everybody loved it. At 3.00 AM Deep Dish took over… After the first CD’s (no vinyl anymore!) we knew that it would become a special night. They started with some beautiful progressive tracks. Slowly building it up. Not only did they play progressive, but mixed it up with real house music with some well-known Deep Dish a-capella’s. It were the vocals of Missy Elliot (looped and full effects), which turned the place upside down. They played really hard techno after two hours (almost like Carl Cox or Sven Vath). What a climax, what night, what a party.

Cocoon club: In your face! (28-07-03) at Amnesia Monday we decided to take a break. At night we went to Amnesia for the German Cocoon Party. Amnesia, one of the most relaxed clubs of Ibiza is perfect for Cocoon. Although there is a lot to do on Monday (Roger Sanchez in Pacha & Manumission at Privilege) it is probably their best choice, having a total different concept. It’s all about techno with a line-up including: Funk D’Void. Anthony Rother (live) and Richie Hawtin. The last Monday with Richie Hawtin was their best night till now. Funk D’Void started with some funky techno to build it up. At 3.00 AM Anthony Rother started his live-set. The one-man live-set of Germany’s electro front man was one of the best live performances I have ever seen. His performance in the middle of Amnesia was surrounded by the ‘’crazy’ Cocoon people like Vath, Hawtin and their Ibiza Manager Johannes. Richie Hawtin, who could be the brother of Vath with his new haircut started with an impressive intro. The ‘new’ Hawtin is no longer a techno-professor with glasses and precise technique and shy appearance. Hawtin played energetic techno and everybody was jumping around, while he was acting like a madman, heating-up the audience waving with his equipment (shocking?!). This night was probably their second top night; I know now why Hawtin is so popular!

Beaches/Restaurants; ‘Our tip for a relaxed atmosphere’

We used to go to Cala Jondal a lot. ‘Particular’ was our favourite spot, but it has disappeared. The beach is still beautiful and perfect for a relax day, if you don’t want to hear music on the beach. ‘Ses Salinas’ is still hot. Although ‘Sa Trincha’ is the only cool place to go to, it’s always a good choice to spend your days over there. I really like the music, balaeric, name it as you want, it’s excellent. For the ones who only come to party Bora Bora is one option. From 3.00 Pm till late everybody is dancing on the beach, on the tables, everywhere. Probably the best place to party and to get a tan, and next to the Space and Pin-Up (where Sander Kleinenberg has a bi-monthly residence on Thursdays).

For advice about restaurants you can just have a quick look in the free-magazines. Remember that there are always some cheap spots with good food (mainly for Spanish people) where you can go to, if you spent too much in the club the night before (with 8 euro for a beer or water it’s not that difficult to spend a lot of money). Two of these are just behind Mary Sol (Ibiza City) on Carrer de la Crue and Carrer Riambeau. Another restaurant (a bit more expensive) is TXINTO (Conde de Rosellon 1) mainly for Tapas, while restaurant La Brasa (pere Sala 3) is again a bit more expensive but its restaurant is open till 1.00 AM and it has a nice terrace and an open barbeque. Two other restaurants are Bambuddah Groove and Bar KM5, but you have to make reservations first. The bar Underground is a good place near the Privilege to have a cheap night out (sometimes with Mr. C behind the decks).
