Exactly.. it was the idea of taking this "beast" from his tropical homeland in chains, and the doomed relationship with the non-beast woman. I think quite a bit has been written on this.

I haven't seen it yet (am dying to) but I heard Peter Jackson's version does play down this angle and play up the connection between the woman and Kong.

It's the perfect blockbuster IMO.

It has all the necessary elements - staggering special effects, easily graspable plot, pantomime good/evil dialectic and gruesome death scenes that kids under 12 will love.

If it was 40 minutes shorter I'd call it a modern classic.
