Repetitive Strain Injury

Does anyone know anything about this? I work on a computer all day, typing for most of the day. In the last few months my wrists have been aching quite a lot, and sometimes they feel stiff and I have to click them to get the to feel "right" again :?

I dont know if this is due to RSI - not quite sure what it is, but does anyone know any remedies for poor wrists? :(

You need to have a risk assessment which is usually done by your health and safety department.

I had one yesterday due to a lot of headache's, the wrist thing was mentioned. Its due to the set up of your desk, chair etc.

ooh I had this, and my fingers got sore and swollen at the knuckles when I first started this job.

I now have a wrist rest for my keyboard and mouse and it helps no end!
Not sure what happened to my knuckles, still get sore with the cold. But otherwise im fine.

Clicking is not good!

I ended up with a numb neck and terrible pains in my arm. i now try to use the mouse less and have modified my position when i'm at the computer.

Becki- do get it sorted. it can end up really serious.

Are your thumbs tingling and going numb? Does your arms/wrists ache at night so that you can't sleep? If so, should get it checked out asap.

I had RSI just over eight years ago and it got so bad I was off work for 3 months and couldn't even do my jeans up. I had intense physio and went back to work gradually by building up my time there.

If I were you the first thing I would do is to get someone to check your desk out. The height of your chair and the angles of your body in comparison to your desk and the floor are all major factors as is the position of your screen. There are also lots of chairs available which move in all angles to get the best set-up for you.

Don't be afraid to tell anyone that you are in pain and that there is a problem. There aren't the taboos around today that there were eight years ago and people aren't so worried that everyone is out to sue them!

As for wrist rests, most ergonomic assessors and health & safety officers (we have whole department at my firm) will tell you not to use them. They cause you to stretch your hands/wrists out more to reach your keyboard which cause your tendons to pull and thus increases the pain. Also by resting on the rest you could be holding your wrist at an odd angle in relation to your keyboard instead of keeping it straight.

It may be worth asking for an ergonomic keyboard to use which will give you more space between your hands and also will relax your shoulders.

Blimey, that was long-winded but I can't stress enough how important it is to nip this in the bud! Hope this helps x

Almost forgot - change your mouse to your other hand for a bit - you'll adjust easily and it may help ;)

i started getting it in both forearms about 3 years ago.

things which have helped me:

> building up the muscles around the affected area - i can't use a powerball like some have recommended, but a simple rubber ring / ball to squeeze does wonders.

> re-assess my work habits - i now never work for longer than 2 hours at a stretch without getting up and stretching / walking about.

> adjusted my seat, desk, etc - raising my monitors was a great help.

> use a mouse pad with gel support - i can only use one brand - the others just don't help, but without it i couldn't work.

as everyone says... do something about it now.

good luck

p.s. your case is probably different to others mentioned here, so the best advice is see a specialist

Thanks for the replies everyone (sensible ones only  ). I've just changed "mouse hand" - feels very backwards using my left hand lol

I'm going to try and exercise my wrists more (no cheap gags please!) and take breaks from typing. It's so hard when there's so many posts on Spotlight to reply to!

Beckiboo,

If I was you, I'd quit my job and move to Ibiza. Get a job which doesn't involve using a computer....you should sell beads and necklaces on the seashore or get a job standing on the beach recruiting people to go para-sailing.

Either way, sitting at a desk 8 hours a day...five days a week for the rest of your life is rubbish. Break free from the chains that bind you!

Worst thing to do, you will end up with two worthless hands! I use a powerball http://www.powerball-europe.com/ haven't had it long enough to experience a lot of help but I heared it workes ...
