Not sure if this has been asked somewhere already but has anyone else heard that Radio One are not doing their weekend in Ibiza next year.
Ive also heard a rumour that they are not doing Homelands and one of the other big festivals they normally do in the UK.

Anyone any info?

not heard anything but wouldn't surprise me. after all 'dance is dead' yawn

hope it's not true tho spunky :P

it comes from a very good source....so i think it might be true.

you might be able to get a taxi/table at a restaurant over that weekend next year then!

The Ibiza weekend has been going for years, it would be a shame if it was dropped, although I've never been to it. I did go for the opening weekend they used to do (last time in 2001 I think). As for the festivals: they do add a little something and it's good to be able to listen to the dj you're missing thanks to the traffic!

Back to the underground. 8)

just found out for definite that radio one are not doing Ibiza, Homelands or Creamfields next summer.
They will be doing Global Gathering and also following certain DJs around the world. Majorca is being mentioned as one venue.
Pete Tong will still be live on certain Friday nights from mambo though.

Only thing that worries me about this is a drop in tourism and revenue if dance music generally loses its shop windows (I'm thinking mainly Ibiza here).

Those with an elitist attitude may be happy if some of the big promoters drop out, but this could start a chain of events that filters down to the smaller promoters/clubs/bars, who will be in less of a position to bear the brunt of further downturns in tourism.

Or it could have a similar effect to the recession in Britain in the 80's when sprawling industries had to become lean and efficient or die. It always takes time though.

Roll on the weekend.

this talk has been going on for as long as i can remember. talk is all it is!

if there's any truth in this rumor then its a sad day

been to radio1 week(end) this year and had the time of my life. it wasn't that hot or that packed as i imagined.

Can't see it, it has mass appeal and if anything it has been growing.

I don't really care about the (Fergie & Seb  ) ess mix just Tongs weekly shows.

The main party was invite only this year. Last year, I guess the authorities werent pleased. I can see why they wouldnt do it, as the crowds are quite manic in August as is. I love the broadcasts though. I wonder if they will be in Miami again.

I was told this year that the reason Radio 1 did the invite only secret party thing was that because the Radio 1 Ibiza Weekend in 2003 which mainly took place outside the Hawiai hotel in San An generated a large number of complaints about the noise levels and that San An "council" wanted around £15,000 for the party to take place in the same arena in 2004. so hence the 'secret party'.

Radio 1's Festival Coverage Goes Global
Radio 1 Executive producer Matt Priest chatted to Skrufff this week about significant changes in their outdoor dance event program next year and confirmed that Radio 1 will be changing the UK based festivals they cover and focusing on extra events overseas.

"We're not going to be back at Homelands, we're not going to be back at Creamfields, but we're adding Global Gathering instead," Matt told Skrufff. "It's one we've wanted to do for a while because it's a really well run dance festival that's hugely popular."

The highly influential UK station will be continuing to broadcast from Spain's Sonar and America's Miami Winter Conference though adding upcoming international events such as Skol Beats in brazil and Serbia's annual Exit Festival.

"We still talking to Skol Beats so I'm not able to confirm that we're definitely doing it but that's exactly the kind of event we're looking at more, as is the Exit Festival," he explained.

"The changes are not so much a reflection on the events themselves, we just need to freshen up our summer and move things forward, to try working with some different people and try giving our audience a different type of event," he said.

Radio 1 will also be abandoning their Ibiza Weekends, though Matt stressed their Balearic coverage will remain high.

"There's no question of us pulling out on Ibiza, rather we'll be covering it in a different way," he stressed.

"Instead of taking the entire station there for a weekend we're going to cover it more throughout the summer, reflecting the club nights and events that already happen, week in, week out," said Matt

well dj Gee did mention something about brazil when i was in ibiza this summer,..and now bbc radio 1 are gonna be broadcasting from there.
