Radio one Ibiza 2021?

The problem with radio 1 is the government put a lot of pressure on that its content should be aimed at 15-29 year olds, and definitely in the earlier ages in that bracket.
Does this age group really all like that monotonous ‘CamelPhat’ sound that all the R1 dance djs play? No idea why they have djs that all play the same tunes and genre. Years ago, it used to be Rampling with the house, Seb Fountaine with a slightly deeper sound, Tong with a full range of dance, Jules with commercial trance, Fergie with some heavier stuff. Perfect!

Not that I expect all those to still be at Radio 1 now, but it’s a mystery why the type of dance they play at the moment is so samey. Gave up on it years ago, but still dip in for the occasional essential mix.

So many alternative options nowadays for specialist music compared to the '90s, probably makes sense to hone your focus rather than pander to a handful, who given the choice are likely going to look elsewhere anyway

I always despair at their Rock week. Nobody who's into rock listens to Radio 1

Me oldest daughter is 16 now. She never listens to Radio 1, or any radio station really, and screws her face up at dance music. It’s so boring apparently.

Her and all her friends are really into that sort of Caribbean sounding type rap or R&B type stuff. Sorry I can’t even explain the genre lol, I hope you all know the sound I mean. Im such a Dad lol.

They listen to it at house parties and make Instagram videos selfie posing and dancing to it like they are strippers or something 🤦‍♂️ lip pouting and booty shakin whilst making gangster signs with their hands etc.

Looks like dance music will die out in the next 5 or 10 years or so.

RIP Dance music

Dance music always goes in waves commerically.

I remember it being massive in the 90s, then it peaked commerically around 1999/2000 (along with the overhype of the Millennium) then there was barely anything commerically for about a decade as Indie flooded the charts until Guetta's 'When Love Takes Over' brought in the EDM boom which ended up with the Tropical House wave that again over exposed the genre and we are in a lull again.

The public like the 4 to the floor beat and it's a genre where you can lazily sample the hook of something else that was a hit before, so the record labels like it...so I think it'll survive.

Yeah I think you are right mate actually.

Thinking back I seem to remember dance music taking a bit of a dive in 2005-06. I was based in Germany at the time and we had a dance music ban in our bar in the barracks lol. I think most people were a bit tired with the constant trance anthems and clubland stuff getting churned out.

I definitely remember indie bands being more prominent around that time period. But in a similar fashion it got done to death and there seemed to be an abundance of bands.

Then a few years later I think it was the whole deep house thing that swept back in?

Haha the ever turning wheel of musical taste and influence.

obviously I can't comment on the kids, what they're into or where it's all heading but I do think that R1 is a dinosaur when you compare with stuff like Rinse, 1BTN and Dublab, increasingly pitched at a diverse and less genre-defined yoof. I also think the biggest threat to dance music isn't a lack of popularity but govt/councils trying to strangle the grassroots.

Purely based on the stuff I'm into, I think we're living through a golden era of music production. Some amazing stuff all over the world. Whether you're committed or curious enough to search it out is up to you though.

the days when we were spoonfed by the same old names are dead in the water though - the key thing to always remember is that we (UK) only grew up with R1 because outside cities with pirates you usually had no choice!

On in the middle of the night but the Radio 1 Residency has some great DJs on it, eg Joy Orbison last night

Surprised no one has mentioned NTS either. It’s a great time for electronic music radio, it’s just that the people that R1 are trying to entice aren’t interested (Spotify generation)

Thats a fair point and with BBC Sounds you can of course listen when it suits you.

I do feel Dance needs some new commercial headliner breaking through though...Guetta, Tiesto and Van Buuren are no spring chickens and have switched genre multiple times losing what little authenticity they had left with each move. I remember when Avicii broke through he felt fresh and that something big was happening. Always needs to be a few poppier electronic acts bringing the kids in before we corrupt them with Techno and obscure sounds :)

To be fair that commercial dance sound is pretty big. People like Sonny Fodera are selling out Printworks etc and seem to appeal to the 18-21 crowd

Camelphat are also massive and have been perhaps robbed of a bigger spell in the limelight due to the pandemic.

I've always wanted Adele to release an absolute dance banger as well, but maybe thats just me :)

Haven’t managed to sell out their Scouseland gig in the summer just yet- thought they would’ve flown out

But are they massive because they’re decent or is it because the R1 producers love that sound and relentlessly push it? They get so much free publicity and is so disproportionate. Last time I happened to have the radio on in the background, a Camelphat tune was Annie Mac, Tong and Danny Howard’s big tune of the week.

It’s the lack of variety that gets me about R1 dance. Take everyone on here’s favourite genre, ;-) trance. There has been one trance essential mix, Aly & Fila in practically the last decade. Contrast that with the dozens of random house djs, the type that have played Oval Space once or or warmed up before Printworks let’s people in that get Essential mixes every week. In many ways soundcloud etc. has made the ES somewhere redundant, but there’s still something special about it.

Just seen that there is a shakeup at Radio1. Annie Mac is leaving in July after 17 years, to be replaced by Clara Amfo. Might not be good news for Electronic music as Annie is a big promoter of our genre.

Danny Howard is taking over the Friday teatime Dance anthems, that is generally the 'put a donk on a pop song' version. Surprised he's taken that on as he seems to have wanted to move away from that and into deeper genres in the last few years.
