IBIZA INSIDE: WHAT IS THE BIG DIFFERENCE WITH THE PARTY SCENE BACK THEN AND NOW…?

Faruk Gandji: The music we had back then was underground and cutting edge, entering the scene from all over the world. The majority of the music today can be heard on the radio and even MTV; it's highly commercial and repetitive. The clubbers back then all participated in the parties and made an effort to increase the level. Now, the majority of visitors are stereotyped voyeurs. But it isn't their fault; they have to consume what the music industry powers are feeding them. Above all, discos were open air, so everyone was tuned up with the moon and the stars as opposed to today's factories…

This is the main point isn't it ? Same can be said about lack of participation and getting properly involved all over these days.. with a few notable exceptions (which sadly rarely last for long before they are stamped down)...

... and the open-air clubbing (especially at night) is great. Even Blue Marlin closing last year was a reminder of how nice it is to dance and party beneath the open sky. Shame it was October and fecking freezing on the pontoon :!:

Nowadays Ibiza is a reference point worldwide for electronic music and big discotheques but the magic of the island that is so often mentioned is a long way from the packaged industrial product that party promoters and nightlife entrepreneurs sell us. As many of you know it was a promotional video by the Ku nightclub in the mid 80s, has an amazing soundtrack (which may or may not have been an inspiration for one of Harvey’s most famous mixes), incredible scenery, great club shots and very balearic people.

Probably the greatest video there is
for summing up the balearic vibe.
