On our way to Auschwitz we called into a small village kinda off the beaten track for some food. There was a cafe that on entering was like turning the clock back to the 40's. Two elderly weatherbeaten ladies behind the counter couldn't speak a word of English. So, with the aid of hand gestures we ordered 4 pints of lager and 4 meals. There was no menu at all, so we didn't know what we were gonna get.
After 10 minutes or so they brought out 4 deep bowls of soup that had vegetables in it. After that we could hear them talking and cooking something in the kitchen next to the bar. They came out with 4 plates piled high with baked potatoe cakes covered in vegetables (and cabbage, they love their cabbage in Poland) and what seemed like beef stroganoff (sp?). We thoroughly enjoyed it, no disrespect to the ladies but it struck me as peasant food for peasants made by peasants.
The big shock was the bill;
4 pints and 4 two course meals came to a grand total of £7.00!
A sleeve of 200 Marlboro cigs = £12 (bought 2 to bring home)
For 5 days inc. dining out twice daily (3 times one day ) and all drink (made real pigs of ourselves the first day) as well as pressies to bring home. Oh and my £25 share of the hire car for two days.
Total spend = £150
