Places to live around Heathrow / Outskirts of London

The BF is, hopefully, joining the Fire Service at Heathrow in the new year thus meaning he will have to move from his camp where he is based with the RAF....

He's from Newcastle and my Georgraphy and knowledge of towns around Heathrow and generally south / south east of London isnt great....he said he doesnt mind up to an hours to travel to get to Heathrow, so can anyone recommend any nice towns to maybe set up base so to speak...

Obviously not a town that is toooo expensive and all the obvious - no sh*t holes, no run down areas  etc etc

Any recommendations and pointers will be greatly appreciated :D

Ooooh you're talking my manor :)

Coming from sunny Watford I'd recommend there :D It's very reasonable to rent, got a good high street, decent shops etc. It's a very typical South East town, not the most cool and happening place but it's only 25mins into London Euston, about 25min drive to Heathrow, or the same to Luton airport.

LOADS of beautiful countryside around there too - Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire etc

I'd say a good place to start your search would be:

Watford (and surrounding areas - Abbots Langley, Croxley Green, Rickmansworth, Bushey)
St Albans (bit further afield from Heathrow, very old skool and pretty place)
Northwood is really nice too if you want to be a bit nearer London
Stanmore if you want to be even nearer London and on a good tube line

Obviously the nearer you move to London the higher the propery prices! Let me know if you want any more info on those areas ;)

Oh also forgot to say:

Watford is basically at the junction of the M1 and M25 which makes it really appealing to people who commute to the surrounding towns. Very easy to jump on the M25 and get to Heathrow from there.

An hr from Heathrow going west is where I live, Swindon:D

Lovely part of the world and property to rent/buy is affordable even in nice places, also locally we have Wootton Bassett which has recently acquired Royal status;)

Its a great area lots to do and places to go, and with heathrow 1hr's commute its within reach:D

Sorry should of mentioned.....

Any town West of Heathrow is a no go, seeing im having to come from the East and he wants the journey shorter and easier for me...

He likes Watford though as he also said its a good night out, so a possibility 8)

Sounds like an expensive place ?! how i got that from the name is beyond me
What direction are we talking from Heathrow ?!

It's about 15 miles east from Heathow.

It's not all expensive, although we pay about £2k a month for a really nice 2 bed flat, but you can definitely get cheaper and you can walk to decent pubs and restaurants that you'd happily travel miles for.

No offence to out-of-towners but living in London is amazing. If you're within spitting distance of doing so, living in Watford (or wherever, not picking on Watford Miss Boo!) just isn't the same thing.

But at the same time, living in London and commuting out of town to Heathrow everyday would just be a pain in the a.rse.

I agree, living in London is amazing, but I probably wouldn't if I didn't work in central London.

Plus, Vic wants something that's reaosnably priced. Ladbroke Grove is the middle of London - zone 1 or 2 isn't it? Hardly the cheapest area to live ;)

As someone who used to spend a fortune back and forth to the 'burbs before I moved, living central is an economy! Presuming Vic's chap is driving, it's half an hour to Heathow.

Vic's chap is working at Heathrow, she hasn't said where she's working (unless you've seen it another thread).

Anyway Bec, it's 'agree with Buckers week', remember?

Disagreeing with you on this one I'm afraid!

Commuting out of Central London in rush hour is a major headache!

Buckley - If both my BF and I were making London money then somewhere pricey like where you live would be nice but im still going to be working in Maidstone, hopefully moving firms in the next coming months....

Beck - Can totally see your point of view and will have to say what youre saying is a better option...

I will be hitting the M20 and M25 as per usual to see him - travelling doesnt bother me, but obviously the lesser distance i have to drive the better....

So maybe somewhere half way between Heathrow and Maidstone and no Croydon is not the one  (no ovense to anyone who lives in Croydon ;))

Around Twickenham could be a good bet. Takes about 20 mins to drive to Heathrow and the M3 comes straight into it. From the M3 you can be on the M25 in no time at all. just google maps London and find Heathrow just to the left of Hounslow (left and just under the M4) you can see the surrounding areas like Twickenham.
One word of advice would be to not live in the direct area of the airport , that whole area isnt up to much from what ive seen

Heaton Moor, SK4.

2 1/2 hrs from Euston with a fair wind.

250k for 3 beds in what is known as a good area (schools, it's leafy, good pubs and restaurants)

I have no idea how you southerners cope - all to be near the queen?!
