Pikes 2018

Pikes was always a bit of a secret, it now appears on peoples 'cool' list and they go not really knowing what to expect and the music is probably secondary. Avoid the nights that everyone knows about, know what music you want to hear and you will still have some of the best experiences on the island.

it’s ultimately luck of the draw and comes down to your own personal tolerance threshold. personally i think people who go to pikes and loudly boast about work/salaries/how cool they are should be fried in their own urine. i did spot a few good folk on monday, old timers in pork pie hats, but they seemed to be outnumbered by the c**ts.

some may read this and be put off. don’t be. if you’re high/able to escape to the dancefloor then it’s not such an issue. still light years better than any other venue & one of the few aimed at adults. but i’m not gonna sugarcoat it. they spread the word too much when it was fine as a sshh. chickens coming home to roost?

Yeah definitely don't be put off by bad stories. A night at Pikes is what you make it..
I’ve been a few times now, but Harvey last year was one of my top clubbing experiences in 25+ years.
If I’m booking my Sept trip based on this night, I can’t have it ruined by Ushuaïa fall outs

They should start asking people on the door who is playing that night and what they know about them musically. It is small enough that a Berghain style door policy would work on some nights.

Though I do like this idea - it's more likely that the 'worker crowd' or dickheads will know who's playing over someone who's new to the place but actually fits the style of Pikes perfectly. Soon enough people will say it should be a members club where you need a referral from 3 current members and a background check to see if you've ever been to Ushuaia or SWAG in your life.

and I'm sure we'll see even more changes next year - but at the end of the day Pikes is a business and they need to promote to fill their nights (and their tills). I really dont see how they can retain the secrecy aspect of stuff without damaging their turnover.

My plan maybe needs a little bit of work.

Anyway, I'm off there tomorrow for a few days, confident I will have a great time! CP a coupe of years ago was great and with a cool crowd, expecting more of the same tomorrow.

I think the one spanner to that, might be that Mixmag are streaming Ida Engberg's set which is gonna open the gate to the wrong kind of crowd.

I didn't go last night, but I do feel slightly vindicated in thinking the Harvey crowd is not quite as good as it should be.

Anyone see Denis Sulta at Pikes last night?

(I had friends who were at Nightwares on Wax during the day yesterday who had a splendid time).

Re. Pikes in general - I agree that the lesser known/promoted events are often the better ones.

Write here, Write now... Pikes and Literature

When you take a look around the grounds of Pikes, it becomes obvious fairly quickly that we are not-so-secret bookworms who simply love the written English language. From hand-painted messages and an antique typewriter in our reception (purely decorative of course) to our wall of flying books in Chez Fez, the secret doorway disguised as a wall of books in Freddies and a collection of 1970s feminist porn in The Potting Shed (which surely counts as literature), we love books and everything they represent.
