Peter Jennings, r.i.p.

Didn't start a thread on this in the morning, but on my way home from work it was still bugging me. I suppose only us Yanks would understand but I was immensely saddened when I opened up Yahoo news with my morning cigarette to learn that Peter Jennings, one of the best news presenters in the history of television, past away this morning at age 67. Cause of death - lung cancer.

I used to idolize this guy... I grew up watching World News Tonight on the ABC network from a very young age. I remember back in the 1970s when he reported from London while Max Robinson (the first black US anchorman) reported from Chicago and Frank Reynolds from New York. Jennings later took over the nightly broadcast as the sole presenter. A total class act with a world view.

Rest in peace, Peter.

I agree Morbyd...I was actually shocked as I don't watch the news much anymore so I didn't even know he had lung cancer and then for him to die...needless to say it was pretty shocking. I do remember he had some of the most poignant thoughts and sensitivity when the World Trade Towers went down among the MASS news reports that went on for months and months after the attacks, which was actually rare for a journalist at that time since most were so opportunistic... :?

He had such a way of telling the news... one of the few newsmen to talk to you without totally dumbing things down. He came across as one of the most insightful presenters out there, and he didn't even finish high school (hope for Nitefly? :? )

I remember hearing about him getting the cancer, but didn't think it was too serious. Really sad news, RIP Peter.

I remember that.... it was the first time I had seen him get VERY emotional over anything. He was ultra respectful and not melodramatic like some other newscasters were

It was 4 months ago... all that time goes by and you think "he's beaten it" but looks like it wasn't meant to be.

I've actually spent the day considering quitting smoking. Nothing's really made me seriously consider that in over a decade.

Ya, you'd think they'd have figured something out by now, especially for the terminal ones like lung cancer. Even with all the resources Jenning must have had, nothing could be done. That's pretty damn sobering.

That came as a shocker to me. I was just telling some of my colleagues that slowly all the people that I remember when I was growing up are slowly passing away. Alec Guinness, Brando, Reagan and now Jennings... very sad.
