I'm an Ibiza virgin and arriving on fri the 10 this month, absolutley buzzin but heard a bit of a disturbing rumour that Pete Tong doesn't use vinyl any more. Was really looking forward to being part of the radio 1 weekend. Can any1 shed some light on this issue and does any other dj's do the same?

Fraid it's all true mate. I can carry laptop, mixer/controller and 250Gb of tunes and clothes in my hand luggage.

Check out http://www.virtualdj.com/ or http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=traktor3&ftu=629bed6564f45c1 to see the software

To be fair, its a good thing Tong does use Ableton, cos he cant mix for toffee.

Never has been able to...

I don't mind that so much, but what ive also heard is that he turns up with a set already to go, so just has to press play. Surely not every1 does this?

I've also heard that some train companies aren't using steam any more! What next - votes for women?

Just got back - didnt see wot p tong was using but still tore the place down. Was in privelage on Sat and all the boys in there were using vinyl! just my 2cents

Tong uses Ableton, with an M-Audio trigger pad, and has his tracks cut up the way Sasha does, to enable him to remix on the fly.
Paul Rogers has been working with him to perfect this set up over the last few months.

Tong does NOT use Live the way Sasha uses it---- NEVER (he wouldn't be able to)

Erm, yes he does, because I had a demo of it from Paul Rogers a few weeks back at London Calling.
The tracks are edited / cut up in the same way Sasha has his prepared. The only difference is that he has a custom-built controller - Tong is using products already on the market.
How he then decides to use the product is entirely up to him, but both are using the same system.

That will by why Tong @ Pure Pacha was changing the beat every 30 seconds. Leave it out. Just because you can does not mean you have to

I'd be amazed if 'Tongy' even mixes 'on the fly'

I don't want to start an arguement about whether he's a good dj or not, but his sole raison DJing d'etre is playing The Hits 6 months before everyone else.

I agree... let's leave it there ;)

In relation to Vinyl, I'm afraid it died in clubland a long time ago. I, along with many other DJ's movd to CDJ's for many reasons, i can carry many times the amount of music with me to gigs, which provides a potential broader selection of music. Also because i was fed up of paying through the nose for tunes that took a week to arrive from the shop only to have bad sound quality or be warped or both. Now I have instant tunage and studio quality.

In relation to Mr Tong not being able to mix, well I have a video of him playing at the Prestatyn soul weekender in 1989 and he was doin good back then. Seen/watched him on many occasions since and no complaints.

I'm back on vinyl and loving it! Traktor Scratch is possibly the best thing ever. Before, and after, sliced bread.
