people who have never heard of ibiza

I have met many people of this genre lately...I'm not talking about people who aren't into clubbing, but i've met a number of people, mostly through my new job who have never heard of ibiza in their life!! :spank:

these aren't grannies either, they are all young single twenty-somethings!!! ha ha..

... or maybe i just spend too much time 'youtubing' ibiza stuff and am obsessed with ibiza websites ?:?

That does not surprise me at all. I come across a lot of people who have not even heard of Ibiza or the term “Balearic Islands”. This would raise a lot of eyebrows on this board, but despite the fact that Ibiza has a lot to offer, if one were to take out the clubbing factor, then the island is on par with many islands around the globe.

Bottom line is that every tourist destination has to have something to offer that will attract tourists that they will not find it where they live. And every destination tries to have a niche that will not only attract tourists, but repeat customers also. Ibiza with its weather and scenic spots and easy going attitude offers that, but it is the clubbing factor where the island has really carved out a niche for her. The weather, scenic spots and easy going attitude attracts young and old, married and single alike. However, when you combine that with a very unique clubbing environment you have customers that keep coming back and back and back. Every business owner wants a customer who is profitable and a repeat customer.

So, to make a short story long my two cents is that it ain’t to surprise if the 20+ year olds do not know about the White Isle.

hmnnn.. true... but even if they have no interest in it... and claim to be worldy young things... you think they may have heard about it in passing at one point in time.. even if they have no interest at all..

i think its more of a north american thing...

I agree that most people in Canada and US do not have much of a clue about what happens around the world. For most folks their world ends after a trip to the farthest mall. However, I am curious how many in Europe would know where Oahu is or where Cabo San Lucas is. Okay, Oahu, by the name might be a giveaway. Just like Ibiza, Oahu attracts a lot of people for the atmosphere, scenery etc., but the repeat customers are the surfers on the North Shore. Cabo has the same thing, but it is popular for Marlin fishermen.

spain is near africa! only 12 kilometres distant at its nearest point! that's why so many moroccans float across on li-los!

Everyone I know thinks Ibiza is a "rave" island where loqads of 18 year olds go to drink lager, take drugs and dance to happy hardcore all week.
I was actually chatting to an old work colleague the other day and mentioned I was going to Ibiza (again) and her words were to me "oh god Bec haven't you grown out of that yet?! You're too old for them type of holidays!" (I'm 23 8O )

I always say to people I am going to Spain, I never mention Ibiza.

actually that reminds me that many of the spanish pensioners who come here every winter have absolutely no idea where ibiza is! one of the main reasons is that on the weather maps in the papers, to save space, the put the balearics and canaries next to each other under southern spain. hence many of the old dears think it is possible so shout across to tenerife when they are here!

old people, worratheylike?

really? 8O

i get the raised eyebrows as well, but i think my general enthusiasm for the place annoys people to the point they simply dont talk to me about it. when i hear about some of the holidays they go on, they sound so dull. lifeless resorts with nothing for miles. if and when i have kids I'll definately be bringing my family back to the island as an old crusty.

can you blame them. the thought of hanging out with you lot sends a shiver down my spine. the thing is we're all different and we like different things. you'd all be bored to tears on a night out with me and the mrs!
verdad?

for our north american friends - yeah, but i bet there are loads of "well-known" places (party spots or not) that will be unheard of in the Uk and Europe.........give me some examples..............like Tijuana (if that works:? , i dunno?)

  @ sirens

this makes me laugh...............cos the more posts i read by you and the more stuff i read about what you have done/are doing, the more it seems we have stuff in common, now that sends a shiver down my spine cos maybe it means i'm actually as grumpy as you are.8O

It's got the same reputation around here. I've learned to just say "Spain" to avoid the questions (especially drug-related). If asked where, I'll say "in the south" or "the islands"... though that's all usually with people at work or casual acquaintences. Friends I'll try to convince to come along

to be honest, if i say i'm going to ibiza and people think they know whats its like.........then whatever, i'm happy to leave them to their ignorance:p

yeah, I think I may have mentioned this before, but a friend of mine told me..

"are you going to that island again to inject dope?"

i don't think there should be any shame or embarrassment about not knowing what commonly happens with dope. i haven't got a clue what the number one dance record is at the moment - and i just don't care!
