Pensions

Ah, Chewie... you and my dad would get along well. Never too young to save for your retirement.

(or to blow your savings on an ill-conceived move to Florida  )

I'm watching my small cash horde grow at a startling rate of 5% 8)

only started it in 2001.

set my retirement age at 60 too

seeing that i'll get **** all state pension, even tho im paying in hundreds a month in tax, i thought it might be a good idea to have started one.

anyway, im only paying in the min amount possible ofr the time being.

I've got a fantastic one that's doing amazing!

Had (an average) one since i was 18, but then changed to a MUCH better one a few years ago. Lost a bit cashing in the original, but soon made that back and some.

My IFA is a genius which helps!

I forgot  All i care about is figures.

I'll dig it out and let you know tomorrow if you like.

I'm paying mine in lieu of part earnings which gets me something daft like another third on top of my contribution. Even more if you're 40% tax payer Chewie. Speak to your boss, maybe he/she would do this for you?

that is something i read up on the standard life website.

if yr a paying "normal" tax, u get credited automatically. start paying 40% tax, and u gotta make a claim for it.

more funkin paperwork. :spank:

I'm in the NHS pension- it's the best final-salary pension you can get. And, unlike company final-salary pension schemes, this one isn't going to change!

No, i didn't mean that.

Say, for example, you pay £200 a month into your pension. Ask your employer to reduce your salary by the same (gross), but pay the £200 for you. This way you'll still get the £200 (net) to contribute to your pension. This is 100% legal so take advantage of it.

going to start mine next year if I can - need to pay off my overdraft and try and sort out my finances first.

Desperate to not end up like my parents who are a bit funked after not starting theirs early enough. Keen to retire at about 60 or much earlier if my career goes to plan!!!

my pension is a flat that i bought which i'm renting out. rent covers mortgage cost, fast forward 25 years, nest egg waiting for me to use/reinvest:lol:

I'm starting one in March when my company's yearly pension sheme comes into effect! I should have done it earlier really, you just think you're WAAAAAYYYY too young to even think about pensions!

I'm seriously thinking about buying a couple of houses (or some land) with mine. Probably somewhere abroad.

My parents started late but cleaned up in the dot-com bubble and had a good amount saved up when they semi-retired.

Then they blew the money moving and couldn't get decent jobs in their new city for a long time (forcing me and my brother to have to bail them out  )

I think the best pension insurance is having a couple of well-educated kids

You're never too young.

My dad never had one until he was probably late 30's so he's had to pay in large chunks of dosh (£20,000p.a. for a few years) to catch up. He did it though and has just retired aged 57.

I think he's bored now though

Found out half way through last year that my company hadn't been paying into mine for a year when they should of been because of some idiot who worked for HR didn't process my form. That was a tad annoying to say the least!

I had that happen to me a few years ago... the firm was supposed to be paying into a 401k (a US retirement account) but I later found out they hadn't. Took me months to get the buggers to just give me the money they'd withheld.

This is my next plan actually - can comeone advise me on the best way to find a suitable one? I've only just got to grips with mortgages and find these financial things to be a bit of a nightmare!

Particularly since my Dad recently got shafted on his. :(
