A couple of months back, Sunshine Jones (Dubtribe) shared a few comments about the classic "Do It Now" 20 years on from its og release. IMHO one of the greatest records ever made. REAL Deep House Music at its most beautiful and communal. Just one reason why I still care.
*the DFA artist he referred is the Juan Maclean and the track is Happy House, which I also love. Bit of an awkward one but draw your own conclusions...
DO IT NOW
// There’s been a lot of attention today over a song of mine called ‘Do It Now’.
My favorite things about this song in no particular order:
• It took more than a year to produce just this one song.
• It was intended to be released as the last Dubtribe single. The last word after 10 years of endless touring and performing.
• Many people think it is a re edit of a pop song, It is not. Every key, every bass thump, every conga, even the guitar is all played by me. There is a 2.4 second sample from the famous song in the chorus as a backing vocal, but that’s the only sample in the song. It’s not even in the same key as the song it’s supposed to be a re edit of.
• Lawrence Petty gave me the idea of where to look for the root of this song. Such a gift.
• Many people have sampled it, one famous DFA/Sony artist stole the whole intro, and the actually asked me to remix it. Never said thank you. Never gave me a credit.
• Hundreds of bashful couples from all over the world have approached me to thank me for saving their relationships, prompting their marriages, and breakups as the direct result of this song.
• There are not less than 16 tracks of vocals of myself and
Moonbeam Jones on this record. Harmonies on top of harmonies, panned wide, layered and yet so sweet and subtle.
• After a year of working with this riff musically, I wrote the lyrics in about 8 minutes.
• The hi hat pattern is all done with a delay. There’s only a hat on the 1. There rest is a delay effect which loops 2 bars.
• I wrote this as a love letter to my best friend and partner.
• It was originally released as a single sided, limited edition 12” single on our own label, and that was supposed to be that.
They sold out in about an hour and we were forced to make thousands more.
• Despite having created a handful of warehouse and sunrise classics, always reinventing myself, Do It Now is most successful and widely applauded record I have ever made.
It is the first record I ever made where I played all of the instruments.
• Ben Watt and Tracy Thorne included this song on their ‘back to mine’ compilation and called it “a missing link” . Highest praise I have ever received.
The best thing about “now” is that it’s never yesterday, and it’s never tomorrow. It’s always right now.
This song turns 20, and I still cry and raise my hands in the middle eight every time I sing it.
