Overdue Solo Ibiza Trip Review July 10- 25th

yes, very honest and well written review

this bit:

"and wrote down on a flyer, asking him what it was when I went up to the DJ booth. I couldn't use my phone becuase the batteries were dead."

had me thinking, how did we ever cope in the early 90s??

Haha. Yeah I grabbed a pen from the bar there and tried asking him on an El Row flyer what track he was playing, but I don't think he knew what I was trying to do when I held up what I wrote to him. He was like kinda motioning me to get down from the booth LOL. I was actually quite bummed for a couple of months after my trip, not only because I was missing Ibiza, but also because I didn't know what the track was. I stopped DJ'ing for a while as well because of it, even though I knew by hearing it again it wouldn't sound as good. I still believed it to be a new track and as soon as I got back home I was trying to search for it on all these DJs' playlists, but still had no luck finding it. I STILL DON'T KNOW what the track was, but it was very easily the best track I heard in Ibiza as it was symbolic of an Ibiza clubbing moment that you hear about, especially when I heard it at Cocoon in that environment for the first time

Thanks for reading guys. I will finish this whole thing up shortly this week, I promise.

July 22- Last Day in San Antonio, Cafe Del Mar , Tropi, Insane @ Pacha ft. Nic Fanciulli, &ME, Matthew Dear, and more

So I slept around 9 AM or so and didnt' get up until maybe 5 or 6 PM. These nights are really tough to survive through. I packed most of my stuff up because I was moving to Es Canar (Santa Eululia) to Hotel Carribe. I was originally going to fly back the next day on Sat but extended my trip till Monday and got another hotel room elsewhere on the island.

My plan was to do one last sunset and then check out the West End properly for the first time since it was gonna be my last night in San Antonio. I grabbed a 13.50 Euro paella from one of the restos by the fountain. I know they're not the greatest but I wanted paella and this place was on the walk to the Cafe Del Mar area. I grabbed a beer and water with it too...seems like I have at least one beer and water with all of my meals. Paella was decent enough, the placemat was a nice map of Ibiza which the server gave me an extra copy of to keep. The food took 20 mins to get to me...it was like 8:20 PM at this point. Had to scarf it down to quickly make the sunset.

I stopped by a convenience store on the way to get some gin I believe with a mixer and some glasses. I wanted to sit on the rocks as well and drink away. Unfortunately when I got to CDM the skies were cloudy and there was gonna be no way for me to see the sunset! Sucks for my last San An day! I managed to grab a bar stool by main bar on the bottom floor, ordered a 15 Euro Strawberry daquiri. Decided to splurge a bit ya know. I heard Cubicolor- Falling being played by the DJ, didn't know who it was. Nic Fanciulli was playing next door at Mambo and normally I woulda went to check him out, but I had to spend my time at CDM since the crowd was too much next door and I really did just wanna chillout at this iconic bar. I met the the sunset DJ from last year, said hi to him. He said he'd join me for a drink as he was with some friends but he didn't :(

I stayed here for a while then just basically went over to the rocks area in front and sauntered by Mambo's as well, not sure if Nic was actually still playing. I seem to remember the DJs playing from 9 PM- 11 PM last year (2015) but I think maybe someone else was on by like 10:15'ish. I met one of the Mambo Bros. though lol. Took a pic with dude. He asked me if I was from Canada, and i told him yeah, and asked him how he knew. He said he recognized the accent because his wife was Canadian as well. She was standing nearby as well. Nice moment for me, cuz I've always seen this guy in pics and listened to his tracks too.

The firedancing lady came out, saw her show which is always nice. Had some small chats with a few peeps in the area until security guards came out and slowly started kicking ppl out. THis was a new thing this year...it seems as if close to 11 PM they start to get rid of all us drunks from the rock area which ruins the vibe a lot. I had the rest of my drinks outside Cafe Del Mar's shop. I was feeling emotional, being it my last day in San Antonio and purchased one of my fave Cafe Del Mar comps, Vol. 9, plus a Dreams comp. as well as a t-shirt and phone case. The store rep tossed in a CDM documentary DVD as well for free which I thought was cool.

I went back to my hotel, had even more drinks and then ventured out to the West End. I settled on Tropi, because I kept hearing so much about it and sure enough they were playing trance as I expected. I heard Big Sky being played. Thought it was a rather small bar, but drinks are like 5 Euros which is like basic drink prices back home (finally!). I was talking with a female DJ there and we hung out for a bit drinking and having smokes. Thought we may be able to go hang out at a Sushi resto on the Sunday, she was agreeing with the plan. Told me about how she made the move to Ibiza for the season early in July and was shacking up at a friend's place. Thought she was nice. The place finished shop at 4 AM, as did all the bars I suppose. Realy thought it would be opened longer, it's Ibiza for chrissakes AND a Friday night!

Anyways me and her headed off her out own ways, I went back to my hotel room and somehow drunkedly decided to head to Pacha for Nic's night. I arrived at like 5 AM and to my surprise the guards just let me in for free! They just waved me in. I wanna think it was because they recognized me from last week lol but I think it was because it was sorta late already.

It was decently busy inside, but not as packed as say Mosaic and def. not as busy as Solly's night (yes, Solly! I said it :p ) I remember going up to the patio area and wanting to get a pic with one of the bartenders but she was like "I only take pics with people who pay me" Wow whateves. They were closing up the top part and pretty much making people go down to the lower levels. Nic played Human Machine- 146 again, which was a great moment again for me. I remember fist bumping Nic at one point. I danced and made out with a random chick before some other guy scared her and she ran away into the crowd. blasted! Nic played Armen Van Helden's classic belter, You don't Know Me, which was jokes to hear. Some girl started chilling with me and then I quickly found out she was an escort. She was good looking for sure but I didn't wanna deal with paid services. She apparently never pays to get inside Pacha which makes me believe that Pacha has a deal going on with this girls or something? I dunno.

July 23rd - Es Canar

Alright so I musta gotten like 3 hours of sleep max. My check out was at Noon I think. My stomach was feeling like garbage from all the alcohol the day before. The Cafe Del Mar shirt I got was a bit small, so I wanted to exchange it for a larger one and get some breakfast as well in the morning before I left

They exchanged the shirt no questions asked, they didn't even look at my receipt. That whole area looks so nice in the bright day but my condition wasn't allowing me to enjoy it fully. I somehow made it to Rita's. I was sorta planning on getting a nice big breakfast meal but could only handle a smoothie because of my stomach.

After I struggled with the smoothie, i went back to my hotel to pick up my luggage from the luggage room. I was gonna take a bus to Santa Eululia and then from there I had to take another bus to my hotel which was located conveniently next to the bus station by Es Canar beach.

My first impressions of the hotel was that it was HUGE. Really big lobby and it looked way more modern than Marco Polo. I immediately noticed more families and younger kids in this place. They actually had actual keycards for entry to your room, which was like a miracle to see. The room itself was huge. I had two single beds pushed together, but I also had a large couch where it was possible for a third person to sleep in. My balcony was small, but the size of the room and big bathroom made up for it. Like this hotel was like a resort-hotel...i was paying 90 Euros a night, thought it was worth it. It came with breakfast buffet as well. I wanted to explore around the area but I really didn't as I was so beat. So I slept.

I got up I think around 8 PM or so. It was too late for Ants...I was thinking of doing a big final hurrah and going to Ants and then El Row with @diver . i was more interested in El Row,where Dusky, Marco Faraone, Andrea Oliva were playing the main room, and Eats Everything all night in the terrace, so I wasn't that concerned with missing Ants. Here's the view of Es Canar at sundown, thought you guys might be interested since it's different from PDB/San Antonio. It felt like I was in a different island resort:

I wanted to get something to eat, settled on this nice looking Italian resto that had a terrace called Al Dente. Barely anyone there, thought it was relaxing. I ordered a seafood pasta thing, with the usual beer and water:

timg_20160723_220014.jpg

The food was very excellent tasting but portion size was small. But damn it tasted good with that beer. I ordered another item after since i was still hungry. I got bruschetta:

timg_20160723_223953.jpg

sorry about the pic not being too clear. This was also excellent tasting, and I finally felt filled up. This resto and area of Ibiza was such a change of pace from the business of San Antonio. The people being older, and families also added to how much more laidback it was. It was nice, but I did sorta miss the younger crowd of San Antonio, but I was only staying here for two days before going home. Unfortunately the laidback feeling of the whole area extended to the service, because it was really slow, considering how there was like basically no one there, but I'm gonna attribute to them putting extra care into the food.

I strangely started feeling tired again after my meal. I attributed it to itis. I decided to get some shuteye at my hotel before heading down, it was around 10:30 or so...

I got up again at around midnight or so, but I was still feeling tired and a bit sick...decided to sleep again for a couple of more hours.

I could not get up...I missed this damn event!! It was apparently the first sold out El Row of the season too! Dusky are some of my fave artists and really wanted to see Eats throw down a 6 hour set which became a B2B2B with him, Marco Faraone, and Andrea Oliva at the end! arrrgh. And who could miss Diver, the main attraction?? :) Damn this suckeddd.

Can I just add at this point, I first stumbled across Rita's as it was the only place that would serve me pancakes, when I had a craving!! I now go back there every time I go to San An. Great place.

Seems appropriate for today! ;)

Tbh nobby, I wasn't feeling it in Elrow that night. Had a busy day out and about with another spotlighter kimajy and was also driving so I wasn't that much fun. As kimajy quite rightly put in later on outside, it wasn't a true Elrow crowd in there.

Yeah but still woulda been nice to enjoy Space one last time. I'm really a big dusky fan so wanted to see them rock the main room... what is an El Row crowd tho

Yo man, I can't complain about Eats Everything playing for 6 hours almost. Most ppl would give up their first born for that in Toronto. I can endure the crowd!

July 24th/25th- Rumors w/Guy Gerber and Sasha, HOME

I'm putting in full sized images for this part since it's pretty much my last day on the island.

I basically stayed in bed until the morning time, I got up around 9 AM'ish I think. The hotel had free buffet breakfast which I wanted to try out, since my condition was much better. I was still a bit chilly and fatigued, and had lots of mucas I was trying to keep inside me (sorry for the detail, but I know you guys like it lol) but I was getting more energy at this point and peckish too so wanted to eat. I wasn't even entirely sure if the breakfast (that came free with my stay) was going to be open but I decided to go downstairs anyway.

Luckily breakfast was on! They had quite the selection of food. Different types of cereal, juices, you name it. It was all quality, or looked like it anyways. It was all families, quite a change of pace from San Antonio that I appreciated, that still struck me as being different. I think I needed this change! This hotel pretty much solidified itself as being quality. just sucks the wifi was down tho for some reason.

IMG_20160724_095330.jpg

I had a couple of plates of food. Enjoyed thoroughly. I went back up to my room to sleep again, I was def. not 100% still. BUT I was planning on Rumors being my last party, as it and El Row were the main reasons I was gonna extend my trip, so I was planning on waking up late afternoon.

Unsure when I woke up again, but I think it was around 5 maybe. I had to grab some food and some last min. souveniers for my friends back home. I went to a shop outside to grab a bunch of souveneirs. I honestly spent too much time getting stuff, must have spent like an hour at this place. I went back to my room and put my stuff inside and then I went outside again to the strip of restos again near Es Canar again, and didn't know exactly what I wanted. There was fish and chips place that I almost went to, but I settled on Marvent Restaurante and tried their thai noodles.

IMG_20160724_183627.jpg

IMG_20160724_184234.jpg

It wasn't the greatest, definitely a step down from Casa Thai and I felt they took too long too. They did apologize for the wait. I basically scarfed this down so that i could catch the bus to Ibiza Town. I wanted to take the cab to Destino afterwards.

Bus station is nothing elaborate like the one in San Antonio. I predrank on the bus ride to ibiza town. Must have taken 50 mns honestly. There was a pretty 'normal' crowd of folks on this thing, so i just chilled out while juicing. I remember sitting next to a German girl reading a book to give you an idea of mellow this bus was compared to the manicness of San An buses.

I didn't get to Destino until close to 8 or so. they were making people buy drink coupons for 15 Euros instead of last week where they would truly let you just walk in. I noticed that this time around tho, the area was more opened up. You could at least use the entire facility in the back, you could even chill on the sun loungers too by the pool. Music was decent by Sasha, at one point he was telling someone to "not touch anything" as one of the CDJs lost their link control I think. I wondered around and found Gerber talking to security there. He noticed me kinda staring at him and knew I wanted to take a selfie.

IMG_20160724_204715.jpg

Before this pic I was like "yeah lets just get this over with" as he seemed kinda annoyed I disturbed him. I told him I liked My Heart and he kinda just nodded and said "I'll see you out there" eee alright man.
He took over after Sasha just before 9'ish and I wasn't feeling the music all that much after. It was still nice being out in the open air and chilling. The views outside this place were great, nice seeing ibiza town. Below are some pics of Sasha playing.

IMG_20160724_204021.jpg IMG_20160724_204034.jpg

I mostly just chilled one of the loungers during Gerber's set. I was just thinking about my trip as a whole, and how it was all coming to an end now.

IMG_20160724_222529.jpg

The music all of a sudden did get better after 10:30, that's when i got up to dance in the main area to see sasha on the decks again going b2b with Gerber! It was nice stuff. Gerber finished off the b2b with Chaim- Love Rehab and Art Department- Catch You By Surprise (Guy Gerber Remix).

I ended up talking to Sasha after, he was still by the booth! That's when I found out about why he was telling that guy earlier to not touch anything. He said that dude wanted to unplug everything and reconnect it but sasha didn't let him because the music woulda stopped. I sad tohim that basically it's because he wanted everything to be just as is, but he said no, that he didn't anyone touching 'his shit' lol. I asked him about the making of GU 13: Ibiza compilation, the compilation that got me into this whole scene, so some of life's mysteries got solved for me. He said he was checking out "his friend" Pete Tong after at Pacha with Solomun. I thought it was peculiar how he stressed Pete being his friend. I asked him if he was gonna do B2B2B with them all and he just laughed and said no.

Some Argentinian girls started talking to him, asking him if he was gonna play at Tox and he said no. I asked him why not, since these girls were asking him lol. He walked away after and I talked to the girl, she gave me a sip of her drink which was like pure rum i think.

Soon after I left the place and took a cab to Ibiza port area. I had one last paella at one of the outside restos. I walked around a bit more, someone trying to get me in their bar to party more. I ws beat, so i declined. This trip was over. My flight was at 8:30 AM to Barca, and then i had to take another flight from Barca.

I took a cab back to my hotel. There was nothing going in Es Canar. Place was literally dead. Nothing was open. I just wandered a bit more. went back to my room to pack a bit more, slept for two hours and then took another cab back to the airport which was like over 40 Euros eeee. I bought an Amnesia and Space shirt from the airport which were overpriced but had to be bought.

I cried slightly on the way back home watching a nice drama from Hong Kong about a woman trying to find her childhood friend. It dealt a lot with following your passion and stuff and kinda struck a cord with me

IMG_20160725_071706.jpg

Thanks to everyone for reading my review. It took forever to do because i had to try and recall from my memory the details and get the info again from texts I sent my friends back home as well. I have more thoughts about my trip as well that i might add later and about Ibiza this year that I've already posted about in other threads.

Its a great review nobbie q , and some cool photos.:) sasha always has time for a chat witch is cool. If it was 20yrs ago those Argentinean girls would have been whisked away to casa sasha picking up tong en route.:)

LOL, I was like "yo man these girls are asking you to play and you aren't?" He was just laughing and shaking his head. I thought it was totally awesome how I got to talk to him properly and thought it was a perfect cap to my trip since Sasha and Ibiza go hand in hand.

I thought I honestly had enough at the end of my two week trip and was ready to go back but of course when I got back home and gave some guy a smoke outside the airport and told him where the smokes were from (ibiza) he asked "where the f*** is that". Typical of the general population in Toronto who are outside the rave scene or who don't know about travelling. I think I instantly started missing Ibiza after this.

I mentioned it earlier somewhere, but I was in withdrawal and didn't want to party anywhere in my home city. I was also feeling some weird physical effects after coming back that lasted for a few months that I'm attributing to the pill I took, but i'm not sure. Never trusting the "looky-lookys" in san an, not even maybe for weed. I didn't start djing until October or so...nothing was as good as Ibiza it felt like and to boot I was depressed not know that track that Luciano/Thugf***er played which was like a quintessential Ibiza moment that I kept reading/hearing about IMO. I know it sounds dramatic but it's true. I feel like im trying to get that moment back with my sets but I can't get quite there because I need that actual track.

Anyways going back this year July 6- 21st so maybe I'll do another long review and it'll be posted a lot sooner.

I quite enjoyed reading this Nobbie because it's a good, honest detailed account and there's obviously a few things you experienced that didn't quite make sense and I think we've all "been there" + I've had escorts approach me before in clubs and that is an automatic no (for me). I find it all pretty grim and a massive turn-off. Getting into Pacha for zilch sounds like a bit of result though!

Really interesting review, thanks for taking the time, a good read @Nobbie Q

You are a dirty dog though!

Are you going solo again this year?

Did you ever track down that time?

How am i dirty!

Yeah going July 6-21st (have mercy on me) and no i wasn't able to find it! The synths i liked it in sorta sounded like the beginning of Sort it out Sharon by Dusky. It must be an older track.

Haha. Was just joking about your prowess with the ladies, impressive for a soloist!

Have you got the SoundHound app?

Hope you have a good time.
