3 Part Serious about 'Our War'

Made for some interesting viewing

Anyone end up getting as engrossed in it as i did ?!

Watched the first one, kinda wish i didnt, missed the second one by choice then ended up, stupidly watching last nights....then getting a telling off by the BF for watching it.

Why, you might ask, because hes off to Afghan for 4 months in August so maybe wasnt wise that i watched it :spank:

All i can think to say is 'F**k you Taliban'

It's a very complicated situation which I don't know enough about, whether we should ever have gone there etc etc

But, regardless of all that, I hope your chap comes back safe and sound Vic. Can't imagine going or having someone I cared about out there, or in any military confrontation. Must be pretty nerve-(w)racking. (sp?)

I have gone over 3 times, It is not as dangerous as they make it out to be. I'm not saying it is safe, but in the last 2 years we have lost more lads to motorbike accidents than to Afghanistan and Iraq combined:(

The BFs been engrossed in this, he even paused it and kept rewinding bits he missed last night, says a lot for him to get involved in TV programmes.....I didnt see it myself but it looked quite sad in places

The first one, literally stopped me from doing anything, had me close to tears actually.

I will be the first to put my hands up and say maybe 2 years i was very ignorant and would generally say 'god knows why you would wana fight / represent this sh*t country'

since then i have dated a marine and have had nothing but respect and admiration for every solider who ever goes out to the front line and that will never go.

The new BF gave me the low down on how the war will probably never end as the Taliban is a like a huge growing family, and as long as they are around there wont be 'peace' - i think thats the way its best summed up.

The 4 months he is out there is gona be f**kin hard but hes probably in the safest job tbh so that gives me a bit of comfort :)

Last night was a bit like  esp of the anp situation ?!

Did you have to do a year stint out there ?!

i saw the first one. was quite an eye opener. It was apparent how unprepared some units were for certain situations. It was basically a group of really young lads getting constantly sworn at by their officer as they struggled to cope with a casualty in a dangerous situation. Not a single order was given without swearing at the guys. Once it was established the guy had died they all seemed to get a blood thirst and were just up for killing as many taliban as humanly possible as revenge. Is that what this was supposed to be about? just reminded me abit of vietnam stories

it was also clear that they had done alot of good stuff in that area when at the end you saw a bustling market which once a ghost town

I was away at the weekend with a friend who has served out in Afghanistan and Iraq and we were all discussing this programme.

He was the only one that didn't naturally find it an eye opener or shocking.

He put it very honestly in saying that when you sign up for the army you sign up to fight for your country in what ever battle you are told to fight. Plain and simple.

He said that most people, 99% of them, want to fight and be in combat, that's what they signed up for.

Bottom line is full respect to anyone that puts their life on the line to defend their country.

I dont think anyone would EVER be prepared or no what to expect until they are actually out there and thrown in amongst it.

Everyone is trained to the best of their ability and its clearly only the strongest people mentally and physically who get set to head out there....

Nothing prepares you and i dont think any of them expect the effect it has on them for when they return home :(

Occasionally I find the aggrandisation of anything and everything connected with the armed forces with no room for dissent a touch unsettling.

Your observations would be better off aimed at the politicians and faceless beaurocrats in Whitehall who make arbitary decisions about equipment and deployment. Our soldiers are amongst the very best trained in the world but are constantly let down by being thrown in at the deep end whilst being totally ill-equipped. God help us if the Argentinians decide to re-invade the Falkland Islands. There is absolutely no way we could possibly defend them.

This ^

The lads and lasses out there probably have as much idea as we do as to why they are out there fighting a war on drugs.

I agree with Padster, the troop don't choose the battle politician do. Military members sign up to defend the nation against enemies. You can't take the piss out of the military for doing that. The elections are the time to tell politico's that you are unhappy with their foreign policy. That being said, the military does not have the right to commit war crimes. The past has shown us that we can not blame the troop for foreign policy.

The way i see it is this....

The Taliban are sick sadistic f**kers who seem preety much brain washed into being complete pyschopaths  thus meaning places like the UK and the USA are gona feel the brunt of their anger.

Therefore we are only 'trying' to 'protect' our countrys as best we can whilst also trying to give the poor souls in the countrys where the Taliban are a better way of life.

As for them saying we are gona be taking alot of our troops out in 2014....ha, we shall see about that...

You appear to have bought the official line spun by the west about the Taliban et al being crazed nutters who must be controlled and contained at any cost.

Just as the weapons of mass destruction propaganda lead to an illegal war, I believe history will eventually show this occupation of Afghanistan was based on quite a lot of nothingness.

The official line on why we entered Afghanistan was supposedly to dismantle training camps and find Bin Laden. Why the hell are we still there? All evidence suggests most training camps are in Pakistan and Bin Laden is dead.

We in the west are as brainwashed by our politicians and media than anywhere in the world. The guys, like your chap, are risking their lives for the queen and country, it is the politicians that are the problem, not the brave young ones on the front line.

Cannot agree with you more....

I thought the case would be, that once Bin Laden is caught and killed that would kinda be it, but my bf has since informed me it doesnt quite work like that :(

It is easy to have a snap answer as to what should be done in Afghanistan. After we invade a country, we need to leave it better than when we came if possible? The invasion of Iraq was all about revenge and oil. There was no good reason to invade. The training camp were there in Afghanistan and they have been dismantled.
