Folks:

So, I am headed off to NYC for a week (Mar-17 till Mar-23) this month for a business conference and some much needed RnR. My first visit to the Big Apple. Any input as to where I should go for some great Deep House musica, great Italian and Ruski meals, and some good shopping would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Well, for the russkiy food you should head over to Brighton Beach. I can't remember names but there's a couple of decent restaurants on the main street there (the one that's under an elevated subway track). If you speak any Russian, the people are extra nice to you ;)

Thanks Morbyd. I appreciate your input. I have heard that there are a lot of people from former USSR settled in Brighton Beach. I will definitely check the area out. I also have to see Little Italy.

Anymore feedback folks???

Just landed back in FLT after spending 5 days in NYC. I lived there about 6 years ago for 6 months and wasnt really interested in going back again; but really enjoyed my few days this time. Weather was cold but not as cold as Morbyd's Moscow temperatures at the moment.

We stayed in the W hotel in Union Square which I thought was fantastic. Perfect location for everything - shopping, clubbing etc.

Restaurants : it seems as if NYC has gone fusion mad when it comes to restuarants with very few of the good restaurants being one particular type of food bur rather a fusion of several types. However, we still went to a few good ones.
Craft - E19th St (Broadway) - food is very good. Supposed to be a mix of French, English, Italian, Fish and Meat. Highly recommended.
DelFriscos - 6th Avenue (49th) - steak house, we went on Thursday night so was full of suits as is right in the heart of midtown. Still pretty good food though.
Mercer Kitchen - 99 Prince St (Mercer) - another fusion type. They do a really good seafood sampler to start. Pretty cool place to go.
Olives at the W Hotel (Union Square) - pretty cool restuarant and bar. Food was very nice.

Shopping : depends on what you are looking for. All the big brand names have their shops on 5th avenue (mostly between 48th and 59th). Then you have the likes of Bloomingales on Lexington and 57th but Macys (34th and 6th) does the same stuff but cheaper. Also some good shopping to be had down in Soho, get off the Number 6 train at Spring Street and walk around that area.

Clubs: I dont think I can hugely help you here. We were brought out by a friend to a club called Marquee which is one of the supposed top places to go. Not my kind of club though. Far too pretenious for me and full of posers. Music was very commercial.
We also went to Roxy on Saturday night which is the big gay night on Saturday. The club is pretty good. the night was very gay and music very commercial.

Hope this helps.
